What did you do in the garden today?

Good evening gardeners. Can't sleep great so I am up extra late. Decided to water only the little hibiscus, oleanders and the new starts, then dug up a few weeds out front. Recently found out my mom has breast cancer; today we found out it's invasive but the best kind she could end up with if there is such a thing. No chemo, but she'll have to take an estrogen blocker for about 5 years; maybe radiation but have to wait until after the next surgery for more on that and the stage. Her doctor seems pretty awesome; I wasn't allowed to go to the appointment but they called me for a conference which I definitely appreciate. Covid is running rampant here and I'm sick of it! I know this pic isn't garden related, but Frank is always good for a grin. Have a great day all.

It is amazing there is some kind of political divide over Covid. I do have a background in public health as one of my many trades in life. Still the folks that made my state unsafe were the ones that stripped off the masks on June 1st. Please kill your own grandmother but not mine. To be honest at my age my grannies have already passed, but I do still enjoy the occasional reconciliation with my own mother.

I'm with you Allen, scary how few people are using masks here now. DP and I are still isolating.

Morning gardeners! Finally the heat is going to break today. Hoping for some showers, but that might be pushing it.

@karenerwin I haven't heard any way to encourage female flowers, I wonder...I did finally get a male flower today & was able to pollinate 3 females. 1 was already closed up after blooming for a couple days, I hope it takes. I want squash!!

I have a foodsaver too, I love it, it works so well & is quick once you get the hang of it. It also does jars.

@igorsMistress I'm so sorry to hear about your Mom. If it's any consolation both my Mother & Grandmother are/were survivors. :hugs & Frank is adorable!

Now I wish I had taken the organs from the cow - I never thought of dehydrating them for the dog, what a great idea! I love my dehydrator too, we're beef jerky junkies.

@AllenK RGV how is you patient today? Good for you for being able to handle that.

@NewBoots your succulents are beautiful! :love

Don't even get me started on COVID - all these people pretending it's over & going on about life like normal are killing me. Europe is talking about not easing travel restrictions on Americans because we suck at keeping it under control. If I have to cancel my trip to Scotland because of it I'm not gonna be happy.

I have to go in to work today. Blech. Have a good day all!

@penny1960 @NewBoots. @Sueby thanks :hugs I know she'll be fine, the news just threw me for a loop for a minute.
@AllenK RGV we didn't use our masks much except when the store was crowded. Now the stores are usually crowded and we are required to wear them. I shop during the week for less contact. It doesn't help that our governor is a butt kissing buffoon. His orders have no teeth...people were allowed to fly here by the plane full from heavily impacted states and no quarantine was enforced. But hey, we're gonna take your temperature and that should make the people feel safe :smack

Good morning gardeners. Best wishes for your Mom's recovery @igorsMistress. I've been biting my tongue for awhile on this coronavirus "fatigue." I understand people are tired of all the extra thought and work that goes into minimizing exposure and transmission, but seriously, grow up. The virus doesn't magically go away because you want to go to the beach or spend your evenings going clubbing in crowded bars. For those of us who are at high risk of death from the virus, this is not funny. The most recent surge in cases are among the 20 to 30 yo age groups. And for those young people who do get it they have most certainly learned that it's not a little thing and it only allows the virus to spread more. Sorry, I needed to get it off my chest. I'm glad I live in Massachusetts where the Governor has a brain and a great team of advisors. We are only in the second half of phase two reopening and the infection and death rates are still declining. However, seniors and others that are at high risk are still advised to stay in semi isolation until there's a vaccine.
So, got a late start this morning in a way. I went out and fed the chickens and picked stuff from the garden before breakfast. I pulled the rest of the endive as it was starting to bolt. The lettuce is fine so I left that. I picked a few peas and 7 small carrots. I have a summer squash forming on one of the plants. It does have a flower bud on it and there are several male flowers developing as well. I only planted two summer squash: a zucchini and a yellow crookneck. I forgot which plant is which, but I guess I'll find out soon. I noticed yesterday that my fig tree is starting to form flower buds. It would be nice to get a couple of figs this year. We are supposed to get some substantial rain today. Right now it's in the upper 70's and super humid. Ick! I'm looking forward to some cooler temps to work on pulling weeds. Have a great day everyone.

@Sueby I have the opposite problem. All but 1 of my yellow quash flowers are male. I keep hoping to see more female blooms! :lau I was even planning on asking if anyone had any tips or tricks to encourage the growth of female blooms instead of male.
So we need a dating system for our squash plants?!

Found our missing trap that wandered off. Coyote must have thought it smelled good, picked it up and wandered off with it into 80 acres of cattle pasture. We went for a walk and found it stuck on a stump on a hillside.

No idea what's going on in the orchard. The Kieffer pears, which lost almost all their leaves in a freeze early on, sprouted more, but now they're thin and some of them have stems but no leaves on the end of them. It's odd.

It looks like we've lost one of the transplant apples from Starks. It just up and quit! 1 in 12 so far. That's not too horrible. Knock wood.

The littles are getting bored with their 16 square feet, but I don't think they're smart or strong enough to be in a protected area of the big girl house.
