What did you do in the garden today?

I have wanted to grow luffa ever since I found out they were a plant!!!
Those shelled beans are gorgeous!
Your fall garden gives me hope that mine might produce something before frost!

thanks!! Several of us were interested in growing luffa bc of @TropicalBabies! And a few of us managed to grow some, but not sure how successful. I’m not sure how successful mine will be either -I need to look up if I let it dry on the plant or bring in to dry. :idunno And I have several birdhouse gourds and need to figure out those too.

Morning all. Very chilly here, dog wants nothing to do with going out. @NightingaleJen I do feel like we will have an early frost. I'm kind of sick of picking green beans so I'd be ok with it. :gig

Going to bake a bunch more squash bread today, probably 6 loaves or so. The squash are almost done, but still going! I also have 3 pounds of green beans I was going to dilly, but my back stinks so I think I'll be blanching & freezing.

DH got a call last night, one of the guys working for him is feeling sick & went to get tested for COVID...so we're all in quarantine now. DH went & got tested last night, we should know by the weekend. DH is not happy, they were starting a canal outage this weekend & now everyone is kind of in a bind. They can't postpone the outage & everyone is in quarantine. I'm soooo over COVID.

Have a great day everyone.

Good morning gardeners. Late start to my day. Had to close the windows because of the temps so I really couldn't hear my rooster "alarm" going off. Yesterday I canned 5 pints of Roma tomato sauce and froze 1 1/2 pounds of green beans. Until I pick up the concord grapes and gala apples I won't be canning anything else. I brought in my impatiens and my bay laurel "tree" to spend the winter in the sunroom. I picked 2 more butternut squash this morning, 3 & 4 pound each. Today I'm starting to dry my herbs. I harvested the oregano and I'm waiting for it to dry after being washed so I can crank up the dehydrator. Tomorrow I'll do the sage, then the thyme. I don't think I have enough parsley to bother with drying this year. I need to set the parsley so there are two plantings - a first year bunch and a second year bunch. The first year seems to yield much more than the second year. At least the house will smell amazing for a few days while the dehydrator is going. My green beans have slowed quite a bit as well @Sueby. I have about 4 pounds in the freezer now so I'm OK if the plant stops producing. I have 4 poblanos that I'm letting go for a few more days and the okra is still hanging in there so the garden is not completely shut down yet. Best wishes to all on the west coast in the path of the firestorms. Best of luck to your daughter @Acre4Me. I hope the storm weakens before it knocks on her door. Have a grat day everyone.

We were over it fairly quickly anyway. We usually do but I was sure toasty over it.

I'm considering pulling most everything and planting winter rye and/or hairy vetch... but we are supposed to have a warmer and sunny week, so maybe the tomatoes will finally ripen? Their leaves are looking pretty rough, though (yellow and spotted). I know my watermelons aren't going to produce any more, but have left them in to discourage cats from using the garden as a litter box. I'm thinking of pulling everything, except for the marigold borders, the fall plantings, and the brussel sprouts (which I planted this spring and are just now starting to bud. That feels like a ridiculously long time, since I was expecting a late spring/early summer harvest ).

Any advice/thoughts?

Brussels sprouts are a winter crop. Ground can get exhausted. Mulch and compost regularly. I joined a very cool Facebook group with experts giving advice on when to plant. Plant above ground fruiters with waxing moon and below ground veg with waning.

I'm glad it blew over quick @igorsMistress - nothing like a mother daughter relationship!

Beautiful pics @Wee Farmer Sarah, I love the shape of the pot the impatiens are in, it looks good inside.

So I did can the green beans, I have enough in the freezer. I picked all the giant beans that I had missed before & put them in a quart jar, I'm thinking they'll taste much better pickled than they do cooked. I also saved all the trimmings & did them in a half pint jar because I love them on a salads & why waste them.

I also made 6 more squash breads, I added cocoa to 2 of them. I'll freeze them & then vacuum seal them.

Regenerating Tomatoes. I only had 6 Tomatoes on the vines and chances are pests would get them before I did so Cut back the tomatoes to the lowest spot I saw suckers trying to form and I am going to see if I can regenerate them for greenhouse growth. I have a feeling I would be better off rooting the suckers than I would be regenerating these tomatoes however I need to attempt to regenerate them to see for myself. Before this year I just planted one tomato plant and ignored it. Usually I got one bug infested tomato and gave it to the chickens. This year I took time to research how to grow tomatoes and realized that bushy tomato plants do not produce much fruit, and keeping a plant to one long tall supported vine would produce a lot of tomatoes. I had moderate success but I believe squirrels bit into half my tomatoes. Those jerks! So far that's all I have done in the garden today other than pass through it on the way to rabbits and chickens. I may harvest some Bok Choy leaves for a stir fry tonight, depends on if I get time in the kitchen, I also have to strain fruit peels out of my first attempt to make vinegar. It smells really awful but I was told that is normal for this stage. It has to sit for another 2 to 4 weeks before its vinegar. Depending on how that goes.... I may not be in the mood to cook after that. Bok Choy is one of my favorite veggies to stir fry. This fall garden is my first ever attempt to grow it and its more pest resistant than that Collard Greens I grew but I did have one bolt and flower. Rabbits enjoyed a box choy meal after I pulled it.
