What did you do in the garden today?

I'm wondering about when to give up on the potted plants and stuff I have in beds around the porch after the crazy freeze. I can't remember when the lillies, etc came out. I had some ornamental grasses and lantana, calla lillies, etc in beds and pots around the house. My elephant ear seemed rotten on top, but was really rooted in when I went to remove it, so I left it just in case.

When was the freeze? Canna lilies should be fine unless it dropped to zero. If they are perennials I would give them at least 2 months minimum.

In mid-February we had 10 days in a row below freezing and some days down to like -13. Remember all the Texas power shortage, Ted Cruz fled to Mexico stuff in the news? We're right across the Red River.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to be patient and maybe plant some pretty and shallow stuff on top of the pots and see what happens. Maybe some herbs too. I do have some hostas, lambs ear, daylillies, etc that are growing.

I got a little over half the main garden weeded. It looks like at least half the potatoes sprouted. Just when I though they were dead lol. They did suffer damage from that last freeze but I think they’ll make it just fine. The blackberry plant has a ton of buds on it right now!View attachment 2600925View attachment 2600927View attachment 2600929If the weather holds we will have highs in the 70s to 80s and lows in the 50s here for the next 2 weeks. That should bring the soil temp up to 65 by next weekend and I’ll start planting. I’ve also got eggs set to hatch the 21st. A building project in the chicken run. Work. And a lot of stuff that I’m too tired to remember lol. It’s gonna be a crazy April around here.
what state do you live in? There's 5 areas of blackberries on my property, and they're all in different stages, latest being turning red, earliest flowering.

I couldn’t find Kidney or Pinto beans to grow this year so I picked up a few bags for dried at the store on Saturday to do a germination test on. It’s only been 2 days and I’ve already got 80% germination on the kidney beans and one of the pinto beans! The other bag of pintos is it about 50%. I’m very tempted to take the sprouted beans and stick them in a bare spot in the garden tomorrow.
Edit: forgot to add that I saw the first firefly of the season on the way home tonight!

I never thought of doing that! I ought to try it... I have a 50 lb bag of black oil sunflower seeds that I feed the animals. Thought about tossing out some of those in a bare patch and seeing what grows.

They ought to grow. When we bought bags for the bird feeder we always have sunflowers growing under it! This is a photo of one them!

We started with a new/bare lawn when we moved, so we planted grass seed a couple weeks ago. Its just warmed back up here in Missouri and the grass has really started sprouting. I have no garden yet, but i did spend my evening in the yard watering the seedlings and planning landscaping. My 15 chickens are 100% free range so they foraged pretty good on grass seed the past week, lol. Thankfully it still looks to be coming up pretty good! I dont know what im going to do when i start my flower beds and garden.. sigh...
