What did you do in the garden today?

Yesterday I built half of the grow out pen in the coop, so I didn't get to the garden at all. I might work on the other half today, or garden. It's nice to have options.

Holy cow the Japanese beetles! I walked into the garden & they were EVERYWHERE! I squished probably 10 then got a container of soapy water & got probably another 50. I relocated the trap, apparently it wasn't working well where it was. Now they're swarming it.

The leaves on one of my potato plants are starting to die back, so I'm hoping they will be at an edible size soon.

How long have your potatoes been growing? Just curious... I thought potatoes had a lengthy grow period? I think I planted mine around late March? Maybe early April.... (I really should have kept a calendar). Anyway, I've had a LOT of leaves die back. I assumed this was from the blight that I never got around to spraying.... They are now trying to "rebound" back with a single green stalk. I thought about just harvesting them and seeing if they were "new" potato size.... But I didn't think full-sized potatoes were supposed to be harvested until September or so?

I looked online and there's no consensus. I planted Yukon variety which ranges anywhere from 50 days to 80-95 days based upon which site you believe. I used grow bags which have a flap at the bottom. I could easily check them and see what they look like...

Last year I was harvesting fresh potatoes on an as needed basis right about July 4th weekend. I would only dig up enough for a meal. The plants were dying back, but had not completed that cycle. I planted them in April sometime last year, and it was the red potatoes I harvested earliest, every now and again.


This year, I planted them all later, and they are only now just starting to show die-back signs on the green leaves of only 1 type of potato. It will still be a couple of weeks before I try to dig any up for fresh spuds. The rest, I'll leave in the ground. The longest season one that I have (Russet Burbank) is definitely slower to flower, and it will be awhile before they start to die back.

@TJAnonymous - you can always carefully remove dirt around the plant stem and out a bit to assess the size of the potatoes, just cover them back up if you don't want to harvest any. The potatoes aren't usually very deep - unless you have indeterminate type that you've mounded repeatedly.

Sorry to hear about the squash I don't have vine borers but I do have squirrels this year.. today I noticed the honeydew looked wilted, on further inspection most of the vines have been chewed through 6 of 8 honeydew are gone now.

I'm seeing first squirrel in my big Maple tree this year. Oh yeah, I'll be trapping the critter and helping him go over the rainbow bridge. I've had squirrels eat up my garden at another home and I am disinterested in having a squirrel family here.

Depends on the type. Do you remember what type you planted? Mine were planted in late February to early March and I harvested in June so about 90-120 days from planting.
