What did you do in the garden today?

I pulled three garlic plants a couple weeks ago. Today I peeled back the papery covering and checked them out.

Look good to me! So I dug all the garlic and laid it out on the front porch to dry. 59 this year.

The suspense was killing me, so I dug one of my flowering potato plants. Nope, tiny little tubers. I sacrificed 1/76th of my potato plants for nothing. :hmm

That, and turning the compost pile made me melt. Took a shower and felt much better! AHHHHH!

Hey all. Was away camping for the weekend & my uncle is very sick & on hospice so I'm heading out to Portland, OR to say goodbye so I won't be around for a while & don't have time to catch up. I hope everyone is good & gardens are growing!

I did get half a day in the garden - I half expected to come home to it all eaten by Japanese beetles & squash bugs, but thankfully that wasn't the case! It's all looking good, I hope DH at least peeks in on it while I'm gone. I pulled the softneck garlic today, it's hanging in the shop to dry. The hardneck will wait till I'm back.

So can anyone tell me what kind of cucumber this is? Every year it seems I get something that was mislabeled. I bought pickling & regular plain ole...these are neither, lol. Very long & skinny & I can't tell if it's time to pick them or not!

Those look like burpless cucumber . Sort of Asian type or a hybrid of those . I have crossed burpless with regular slicers and got a nice hybrid . The Asian types live longer for me .

Instead of digging up the entire plant, you can just gently dig around the root area and see if there are any harvestable size tubers. I do that all season long to get the new potatoes for summer cooking.
Yeah. I've never done that, and I was really curious as to what was down there. This particular plant was in a crowded area where a couple volunteers came up, so that's why I took the whole thing.

If I get curious again, that's what I'll do. Probably wait a month or so. I don't know if this plant is typical, but what was there was maybe 1.5 x 1" ish size.

I needed to spray the peaches, apples and grapes this morning and couldn't get my sprayer to work because of a clog. Spent 30 minutes trying to fix it... Then walked outside just in time to see a large crow dive bombing a stray cat who was running from some scrub bushes that my 4 week old baby chicks hide in. I took off in that direction... Got to the bushes and 5 chicks began running back up to the chicken yard. That meant 1 was missing. I went over to the tree line were I'd seen the cat run. No cat... I searched high and low in those trees and brush. No baby chick. After 15-20 minutes, I gave up and walked back towards the house feeling very dejected. When I got back up to the chicken yard, the missing baby was following along behind a hen completely clueless to the chaos.... 🙄 I'll be SO GLAD when these babies get too big to get through the fence.....

Needless to say, I didn't get anything done in the garden this morning as a result....

I'll try to get caught up but man, this thread flies these days! Getting too late to add much more to the garden for the year so most of my focus is keeping things watered and weeded. Tying up tomatoes and willing them to fruit faster. Harvesting zucchini, raspberries, (a few) strawberries, and snap peas. Very disappointed in the snap peas, I completely messed up the trellising, next year I'll use cattle panel, the string trellis isn't strong enough. The tomatoes look great though and are coming right along, hopefully I'll have some ripe ones by the end of the month. Can't wait! Fresh salsa.../drools.

Gooseberries are ripening:

Happy 4th all!

I did a similar horse worming schedule for many years (eg. Quest+ lasts 12 weeks, Iver 8 weeks, panacur or fembendazole 6 weeks, repeat in the fall) but a few years ago discussing worms with my vet, she recommended doing a fecal every year and then tailoring the worming schedule accordingly, since some species of parasites have been becoming immune to some wormers. So now, I worm only 3 or 4 times a year, plus a Panacur power pack if the fecal shows a parasite load, like if there is an unusually wet spring or cold winter Their fecals have actually gotten generally better than when I was doing the 6/year schedule. Of course, this depends on the climate in your area, Arkansas may be best with your current schedule.

I used to not like them either, but my S-I-L gave me a load of turnips last fall, so not wanting to be unappreciative or waste them, I made turnip French fries. Cut them into fires shapes, spread them on cookie sheets, sprinkled with salt and pepper, and baked them at 400 until crisp. They were really good! I'm now more of a fan of turnips, maybe I'll start growing them next year.

Wow, that sounds like my dream job. I really hope you get it! When I retire in 5-10 years (or go part-time at my current job) that's what I want to do - garden supervisor at a horse stable, or horse-care manager at a garden, LOL.
Best of luck to you - and let us know what it's like!

My tomatoes are growing like wildfire, to the point I have to prune and tie almost every day. Eggplants and zucchini are flowering, cukes and beans are starting to crawl up the trellises, and of course the weeds are also thriving.

Our cuckoo Marans hen is sitting on eggs! We don't usually micromanage broody hens, just isolate with food, water, and let them hatch and raise whatever chicks they can.

do you have seeds for pasture? here they contain some seeds of plants that are natural wormers. unfortunately I don't know their english names.
