What did you do in the garden today?

Got 3 Maters in the ground. Wally World didn't have much of a selection. 2 roma's( all they had) and one cherry. Will check again for more to fill out the row.
Replanted mustard. Usually grow it in the winter but didn't have much luck this year, Light freezes (>28F) killed most of 'em. Never had that happen before. Gotta try to get some in the freezer before they go to seed during the summer.
Finally started getting some snow peas, warm weather seems to agree with 'em this year too. They have been a staple in our warm winters here but not this year. They grew but barely produced anything. This winter has been weird.
Carrots gettin bigger, Garlic & onions should be ready soon.
Gettin seeds together for the rest of the garden.
Picked up 15 bags of laves today for mulch but chicken pen got half of 'em. Supposed to be wet next couple days & we were down to bare dirt.. We could use the rain!
Happy gardening y'all

Worked one half of a bed -will finish tomorrow and put the sprouting potatoes in there tomorrow. Already worms in the dirt. Taking time to turn the bed bc of the deep rooted plant/weed I’m finding.

Went to Menards and had to walk past the seeds. I don’t need any, but shocked they were already sold out of several kinds -unusual for March in this area!

Turned 2 of the compost bins (it’s a 3 bin system). The middle bin had a few worms here and there. The last bin had many, many worms throughout! Yay worms!! So, I’ll use some in the potato bed.

It's been a BUSY day... Couldn't find any live San Marzano plans, but found some organic SM seeds so I got those sowed. Also sowed some chives and rosemary seeds.

Put some new windmills out in the garden to hopefully deter the deer from visiting.

Cleaned both chicken coops.

Marked the little tree starts I planted last fall with some orange flags. I need to spray some 2-4D in a few weeks and I don't want DH inadvertently getting near the baby trees.

I spray painted two old pots to make them black. I'm using them for some new indoor plants I got off the clearance rack at Lowe's yesterday. The black will match the decor better... Now I just have to let them dry and put everything together.

I also drew up some framing diagrams for the redo on the hoop house. I want to make it easy to take apart and move around the garden from year to year so I'm framing it in pieces. I just need DH to build me 5 rectangle box frames (3' x 10', (2) 3" x 6.75', and (2) 3' x 9.75'). I'm so anxious to get started on it!

I also bought a pallet buster crowbar. We have tons of free pallets around town. I think I'm going to get some to build some 2 ft x 2 ft raised beds.

I raked up a bunch of leaves, turned the poop pile into a compost pile, weeded 5-6 bucketsful, raked some more. The chickens got a bucket of weeds and a tote full of leaves. They were happy.

I'm going to till my "big flat area" where I grow butternut squash and potatoes. I haven't tilled it in 3 years. I cover it with leaves in the fall, and just clear out where I need to make a squash hill or a potato hole. I'm aiming for next weekend, if it's dry. I think I'll need DH to get it started.

When I get that done, I'm going to plant some potatoes. I've never planted them this early; usually it's mid-May.

I found out San Marzano’s are indeterminate so I’m going to try growing them as a vine. There were two sprouts in the pot, divided and planted both, then watered. Tomorrow I’ll run over to HD to get some compost to put down for the starts and onions, then mulch the onions with rice hulls. This week I’ll have to finish the shredding, that means every afternoon all week, so that next weekend I can move some wood chips, plus I still need to rake bunny poop and distribute too. This is our forecast

I spent a little under 3 hours at the Farmer’s Market/ animal swap. I sold 9 jars of ( pickles, salsas, jams& jellies ). I’m happy to say I made a profit 🎉
There were a lot of variety of things for sale! Calves, dwarf goats, pigs, puppies, rabbits, turkeys, roosters, hens, chicks, Guineas, rats, mice, Guinea pigs, quail, quail eggs, a few plants, home made soaps, breads, cookies, jams, jellies, salsas, pickles, Kleenex box covers, hatching eggs, eating eggs, cages and accessories, toys ( jump ropes & stuffed animals & ??), light bars and who knows what all else!
Because of bird flu no water fowl are allowed per Missouri rules/ guidelines ( whatever).
It’s kind of surprising that they haven’t banned birds all together since many people have their ducks in with their chickens and whatever. 😳🤷‍♀️
Our weather was absolutely gorgeous today! ❤️
When I got home I cleaned out rabbit poop and added it to the gardens. Then cleaned out chicken coop ( dirt floor) and poop boards in other coop and added to compost bin.
Tomorrow I need to buy more shavings so I can clean out and refresh both coops nest boxes and 1 coops floor. Also need to buy rabbit food and egg layer pellets. I want to get more branches sent through the wood chipper too. So far I have 9 big trash bags full. I’m going to use them to mulch around plants in the garden when I finally get to plant.
@igorsMistress my brother just gave me a n aqua timer for my birthday. I saw his last year when I went to visit. I can’t wait to try mine! He bought it at Home Depot.

You can program 4 different hoses (zones) and set multiple times and days.

Here's the 2 plants I got off the clearance rack for a total of $2. One is a Janet Craig Dracaena. The other is a Bromeliad. I bought the matching stoneware pots for $30 ($15/each). The smaller 6 inch pots that the plants are in used to be an ugly dark teal color. I spray painted them black. Then I bought some smooth black stones from the Dollar Tree to help stabilize the smaller pots. There's actually a deep dish plant saucer inside the stoneware pots that fits perfectly... Anyways, I thought they looked nice for a grand total of $36. 😊

(Try to ignore all the dog toys everywhere.... They are worse than toddlers! As soon as I pick up after them, they drag it all out again! 🙄)

We had an English Mastiff when we were first married and clear until my youngest was 5. He had a toy box with his toys and a little blankie. He would take his toys out to play with them and then put them back in the toy box and get a new toy.
Smartest dog we've ever had, we miss him all the time.
