I'm looking into black soldier flies now. If I ferment feed and supplement those I may be all right even if feed gets more expensive/more scarce.

Your plants look wonderful.Big storm this morning.. I transplanted 25 peppers out of trays and into bigger cups, fed all my seedlings in the homemade grow tent.. I’ll get outside in a bit and mix compost and perlite for more plants going outside this weekend.. fixing to get really busy round here..
Thank ya.. I’m in N E Texas.. last week was first week with no low temps below 45°.. hardened off a bunch of plants all week so I’ll get 50-60 tomatoes in the ground Saturday morning.. I need the room inside for peppers to grow a bit before hardening them off..Your plants look wonderful.
What part of the world are you in?
I can't plant anything outside unless I want to kill it right now in Iowa.

By the way there's a preserving thread too! https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/preserving-your-harvest.1485715/
Knowing that animal feed is going to be WAY more expensive and harder to get, I've been trying to prep for it. I'm moving my animals to a fermented feed which should, in theory, help them eat less. Is anyone doing this? Just curious how your setup works...
Anyway, I also bought some seed create a feed plot - millet, oats, spring wheat, buckwheat, and amaranth. I just haven't been able to figure out WHERE to put it. I have so many huge oak trees that cast shadows. Also live on the side of a foothill so the soil is rocky in most places. Then there's the animals....all available pasture (4 acres) is used for horses so I'll have to make sure to keep horses, goats, chickens, and deer out of it. Well....I *think* I finally figured out how to solve my dilemma.
I have some galvanized metal raised flower beds up by our house which sit right along the pasture fence line. I'm wondering if I can get DH to till a 5 ft wide swatch on the pasture side of that fence that extends about 20-25 ft... I'd have to install some temporary fencing to block it off so the animals couldn't get in there....but being up closer to the house would allow me to keep an eye on it, water it easier, and ensure the animals aren't getting into it. The only downside is I'm sure DH will complain about the tilling and potentially about the aesthetics which will block his view of our pond. Plus, the soil in that area is generally pretty sorry. It's rocky and bedrock is only 2 ft down. I'll definitely need to add some compost to amend the soil.
*sigh* I wish I had more land to leverage for an honest feed plot.
I know it's a ways off but when you have it set up can you post some pictures Of your stand?I have a produce stand..
