What did you do in the garden today?

If you want to keep a strain pure from season to season, you must isolate flowers and save seed from that particular pod.. cross pollination doesn’t effect same season peppers only the next seasons fruit.. contrary to popular belief.. and there is no heat “in the seeds” like many people think.. there is a hot Cherry type pepper out there also..
Yes mam, I used to sell and ship my peppers all over the country..

Funny story to start your day.
The iShark robot vacuum that was banished from the house because it ran into some dog poo (shark voided its warranty and wouldn't sell me clean replacement parts), was living in our giant garage, which also has a large utility area, the seeding shed and a place to store coats, shoes, a chair to put on shoes etc. I had the great idea to load the vacuum up to run out there, but program it to just patrol the people area for grass clippings that blow in, dead bugs, etc. Not to patrol the car area, where it gets really dirty and wet.
So last night, before bed, I got up to close the garage door for the night and noticed Mo wasn't in his dock.
WTH?
I didn't hear him running either.
The 'find me' button wasn't sounding his beeps, and it said Mo had no Wifi.
DS got out the flash light and searched the garage, nope.
Well of course not. Mo was 50 feet down the driveway, the GRAVEL driveway. He was out of wifi range and couldn't get home. His little dust bin was full and he was just sitting there, sad.
As if the neighbor's didn't think I was crazy enough, they probably thought I was really nuts last night, vacuuming the dirt driveway.

Is it any wonder it hit poo in the house. The avoidance on this thing doesn't work.
It ignored its programming and wandered out of it's zone of programming.
It ignored its programming and wandered through a digital wall.
It ignored its dust collection alarm that told it was full, and to go home.
It ignored its low signal programming that kept it from dying too far from a strong signal and to go home.
This model is terrible!
Our older models are fabulous and still going strong without issues.

Curious what you're thinking about making.

I've only ever done beef jerky for meats.
The book I bought talks about different ways of smoking and curing meats. I want to do jerky too but I have a dehydrator for that. Mostly I wanted to learn the process to cure meat without electricity. I also bought some curing salt which I wanted to experiment with but that's when I got too nervous to try. I really do need to get over it though because it is an important skill to learn.

I would love to have one of those but my floors are not level. For some reason the previous homeowner put new hardwood floors on top of old hardwood floors so my living room floor is about 2 inches higher then the rest of the house. I figured a robot vac couldn't navigate that differential.

Cool! I use curing salts now, I never used to but I get scared of killing someone, lol. Of course don't google curing salts, it's almost as bad as botulism. :gig

One of my personal pepper creations.. see how I isolated flowers to ensure it stays pure.. cheesecloth/fine netting even pantyhose will work, cover flowers before they open, when open and while they are isolated thump the branch several times a day for a few days to ensure pure pollination.. once pepper starts to form remove netting and mark with a simple string loosely tied around the pepper stem..

Yep, that's why I abandoned my seed saving. Certainly didn't want anything that might be half cherry pepper! :gig

That is hilarious!!

I have a funny robot vac story...I had it programmed to clean at noon every day. One night DH & I were in bed, not yet completely asleep & we heard noise from the kitchen that started coming down the hall. I just KNEW someone was in the house trying to navigate in the dark knocking into everything so I was trying to convince him to get the gun out of the safe thats mounted to his night stand. He just ignored me, got out of bed & went out in the hall to find the robot cleaning. It's now a big joke here with vacuums & shooting them... That is why the guns are locked up. & not on my side of the bed. :gig

Plans for today include taking my basement back from the plants!

Putting my peppers outside. I brought them in last fall as an experiment. In 2021, I bought them as starts in early spring but they never set fruit. In my vast irritation, I brought them inside because I did NOT waste all that money and time watering them for no peppers! A few months ago they started some fruit! Hasn't progressed much - they are the size of golf balls. I think putting them outside will get them going.

I truly think last night was our last freezing night. I keep obsessively checking the lows and after this morning they jump up to 50s! So now the Purge! Peppers out! Aloe and dahlia out! Potatoes went out earlier this week.

I think I will get the grape vines in the ground today. Have to dig big holes and amend the clay for them, so this might be the only thing I get done today.

Keep forgetting about the rhubarb bare root I bought. Gotta get it in the ground soon!

The tomatoes I will wait a week or so to put out. Canna probably wait a bit too.

Good morning gardeners. I managed to get the 16 foot raised garden bed cleaned up yesterday. I put cardboard in another walkway in the big garden then dumped the leaves onto that. This morning I picked 3 more asparagus spears. The onions are really doing well. It looks like the kale is starting to break through the soil. I've up potted all but the Better Boy tomatoes. They're finally getting their secondary leaves. Also the Poblano /ancho starts are getting their secondary leaves as well. I guess it's a supply issue but I couldn't find any peat pots this weekend. I picked up paper cups to finish the up potting. We could get a little frost over night and tomorrow night. Fingers crossed it isn't long lasting. My peach tree is blooming and I don't want to lose any peaches this year. The long term forecast looks warmer, thank goodness. You could try a smaller cut of meat @TJAnonymous. Try smoking a slab of pork belly then curing it. Homemade bacon can't be bad for you. And it's a smaller scale project than a large cut of meat.
