What did you do in the garden today?

Got another bed cleaned and prepped. Cleaned up less then half the weeds along the fence line, 1 whole wagon load. 😑
My Potatoes showed up yesterday, so we got the tiller out and got half of the new bed surface tilled before it and we ran out of gas. The soil looks a LOT better then I was expecting. Should be able to dig full depth for the taters.

Probably won’t get out to do much til the weekend, work week is tough! I did harvest about 10 asparagus spears (our first year it’s ready!) so hoping to have enough for everyone by the end of the week!

It was overcast today, so a perfect day to put the tomatoes out from morning til night. Rain again tomorrow and then clear for a bunch of days in a row!

I have to google starting dates for squash, cukes, zinnia, nasturtium and sunflowers so I can get them started soon. Need a few more bags of soil to top off the raised beds, and will hopefully add radish and beets this weekend!

Currently on the FL panhandle. 5-6 hours till I reach my new home in E Central FL today. Managed not to encounter any severe weather on the way. We stayed near Canton TX to visit First Monday and that night Dallas got a big storm apparently, but being a bit south we were fine.

@igorsMistress do you know about https://www.facebook.com/AZRFG/ ? I was part of a chapter in California. They are a great resource for fruit trees.
Thanks so much vall, I’ll check it out!

Sounds like foxes mating.
Hmmm, that could be. I know we have a vixen in the area. She has had a litter of kits each summer for the past 2 years. She and her kits are also the biggest threat to my chickens. She and some coyotes have taken out at least a 12-15 chickens in the past 2 years but I refuse to let DH shoot her. Instead I've simply tried other solutions & deterrents such as setting off firecrackers, putting nets up over my run to keep the chickens from flying out without permission, and keeping a human presence in the area in the evenings and weekends. So far it has definitely helped. My losses have gone down tremendously.

I had a vixen try to snatch a hen just 5 feet in front of me. They don't care if you're out there during kit feeding season. I don't trust them at all.
Sunny afternoon and I transplanted 6 mums for mother's day into larger pots and I can't get the stickers off the pots! I'll try goof off tomorrow. So annoying, do companies not THINK about this?

I finally got all my plants in the ground...in the garden anyway! :celebrate There's still a lot of work to do yet.

1. I have to re-till the area that I was going to plant as a feed plot (wheat, oats, amaranth, millet, buckwheat, marshmallow)

2. Still have to put mulch over the cardboard in the garden

3. Have one more row cover to get netted for the broccoli

4. Have another raised bed to make for my hummingbird/butterfly bed in the backyard

5. Still have to sow some watermelon, pumpkin, and spaghetti squash down around the compost pile. Trying to grow these curcubits down there in hopes that the chickens will keep the squash bugs away....

So I forgot and left a bag of bulbs (dahlias, hostas, etc.) As well as potatoes to plant.and they got rained on...will they still all be ok to plant in the morning?
I'd open them to air out a bit but as long as you do plant them right away, they should be fine.

Got a bit more done in the yard, hung the light on the front of the coop, and got a good start on clearing out the greenhouse and the deck next to it.

I've decided to add a couple more raised beds and 2 or maybe 3 dwarf fruit tree boxes.

Edited to add that the pine shavings I bought for the coop and brooder are freaking damp! I'll talk to the feed store I got them from, we haven't been able to get the fine pine shavings we've used for years but if these are all that's available now, I'll have to buy the premium ones they sell in pet stores for the brooder.

@NewBoots did you buy at TSC or do you have one nearby? That's usually where I source mine. The pet store prices will make steam come out your ears...

My "big" garden is coming along nicely! I'm seeing corn come up, more okra, more cucumbers, and now the spaghetti squash has made an appearance as well! Only thing not up at all yet is the watermelons.

I'm thinking once the season is over for that plot, and maybe a good chunk of my other spaces too, I'll plant winter wheat. I don't know how well that would work, but I'm really, really wanting to dabble in making my own flour. I've started baking all our bread now, and for the first time in my life I'm having to buy a bag of flour once a month or more. I haven't gotten the timeframe down quite yet, but I'll get it figured out.
