What did you do in the garden today?

yesterday the farmer was in the field behind us re-planting corn in the entire field. I asked him about it, he said that the weather/rain pattern created a thick crust so the corn could not bust through very well, and the ones that did would be energy deficient and would be stunted. This was one of several field they had to re-plant. That’s gotta be expensive!
Ridiculously so. Not only in seed, but time, and diesel.

I felt slow yesterday, but I did manage to plant some summer squash (ripped out the previous starts that weren’t doing much), several melons, leeks (yes, a bit late), pumpkins, and okra. Everything got a layer of straw and watered.

Soaker hoses: is there any way to prevent a soaker hose from releasing water at a certain point along the run? I think I cannot do this, but figured I’d ask. I’m getting a large puddle in one area.
Waterproof Flextape?

Done with the trees. The hose is still running on a couple more things and then done out here for today.

Nice!

Too bad you don’t live near me - you could have free Lily plants . It is clear the previous owners loved them as they are present on 3 sides of the house, including quite a bit of the back. They are also planted in an area where we put our garbage bins, so we have been trying to dig and give those ones away!

I am the same - nice minimal work landscaping in the front, but garden and work zone in the back.
Thanks! I gladly would have taken some! I do daffodils for the spring, and added lilies behind them this year for a pop of color once they die out.

Choices are basic: deer resistant, tolerant in zone 5b, staggered blooms, and don’t have to remove the bulb every year! I love tulips but you are inviting deer to a harvest if you have any near your house!

ETA: just got all 30 into the ground! Gonna wait for DH to help me put the mulch on top, I pulled something last week and one arm is still bothering me…don’t want to retweak it by carrying those bags.

Hmmm.. will that stay on permanently? Bc duct tape was suggested, but I don’t want a permanent block -just this season.
No idea. Stuff is strong! You can divert what does come out though to other places by sliding a bit of pvc tube on the area you want to remain dry. OC it will run into the tube and then out at the ends.
