What did you do in the garden today?

Planted another pile of pole beans because why not? Transplanted my winter squash and two more cucumbers, weeded the tomato row, and tied up the asparagus fronds which were tipping into the walkway. Went to the farm and transplanted pumpkins and more winter squash, seeded zucchini and greens for the chickens, and hilled up the potatoes growing there before the thunder started. Chickens were very happy with the pile of weeds DS pulled up for them when helping me!

Totally forgot to start nasturtium this year, so that is now on the schedule this week.

Tomorrow the backyard coop-in-progress is getting a roof, if the weather holds off! Fingers crossed!

"just" I've put in T-posts. "Just" isn't an accurate description!

DH actually uses a jackhammer. He stands on a ladder with it & I hold the post square - it makes quick work of fence posts. He made a cup attachment for the hammer so it stays on the post.

Sounds dangerous! I know they make gas powered post pounders, basically a special purpose jack hammer without the extra "length" of the tool.

Less water more frequently?

My understanding is the more you water with less volume the more likely what you get is shallow roots and plants that can't deal with dry spells. Usually one wants the roots to go deep so the proper amount of water every few days is better for deep root development.

The big box stores carry varieties that do fine here but sell them in Spring which not the best planting time.

In fact it is the WORST time!

Those squirrels keep eating my strawberries that I was excited to pick- it's about time for revenge .

My peppers are flowering... The problem is that the plants aren't even a foot tall. Something has clearly stunted them. Bummer. Oh well, didn't really need any peppers anyway.

I got my wilting loofah watered and it perked back up. About to start flowering. Not looking forward to getting up at 6 AM tomorrow to water the main garden.

Stopped by Goodwill today and bought a basket for $2 to collect produce in. Also picked up a wire shelf thing that I can use to allow my onions to cure properly so they can get airflow all the way around.

Also got the Silkie coop thoroughly cleaned today. I put down all new sand and an entire bag of shavings. I also caught around half dozen baby mice in there. Tossed them outside. Chickens caught several of them. I really need to put another live trap in there to catch them all... It's so hot in there though. The little fan I had in there crapped out from all the dust. I was so hot and sweaty that it looked like I went swimming in my clothes. I was only out there for 15-20 minutes to clean the coop! I had to shower after coming inside and put on clean, dry clothes.

I finally planted this weekend. It's been cold here.y garden is more for fun than to actually supply our family since it is so small. Might try to fix that in a year or two. Idk.

Never topped 55 here today rain but made the tiller jobs easier that was me.. This is wetest in years with it lower temps hard on the plants and my arthritis..

my pepper plants are stunted as well. sudden heat?

I am surprised by leghorns. they don't leave anything alive. going to keep a few of them just for that purpose. they are not meat birds and their eggs have plenty of egg white so I don't like them either. good for pies and cakes though.

some more rain here so no watering today. zucchini still have a fertility issue. I don't see many bees this year.

Any thoughts on this idea? I cut up some banana leaves, bitter melon leaves, grass and compacted them in a gallon coffee can. The coffee can has screw size holes on the bottom. I wonder if the material will decompose and leak nutrients into the potting mix with the air tight lid? I did not bury the coffee can, its just resting on the top. I poured fish poop water from my pond filter in the can to activate the process. I have 2 Molokai sweet potato slips in this 20 gallon wicking pot.

If you drilled air holes in the lid and put a handful of worms in there, it would be even better!

I am making compost tea, its not a worm bin. A worm bin is planted in the soil, so the worms can move in and out.

It rained yesterday evening. So much rain in a short time!! We need to put gutters up on the chicken run roof - it will really help when such rain hits. The mulch in that area was clearly picked up and moved about/swirled around. The garden is thoroughly soaked - the raised beds all drain fine. The two large beds are “raised” above ground, so they don’t get waterlogged. But, the plants struggle with nutrients with so much rain, so I may need to check on them this morning-see how they look before the big heat wave that is coming Tuesday-Thursday.

Not as hot as some of you, but really hot for mid June here. And those nighttime temps are fairly high for here too. It’s also fairly high humidity, which is the bad part. Guess my kid isn’t going to complain about outdoor morning swim practice this week….
