What did you do in the garden today?

This morning I pulled 6 more ears of sweet corn. I baked it directly in the husk after bringing it inside. Still wasn't sweet although it was better than the last batch. I think I just missed the window for ripeness and now it's over ripe. 😑 Three years I've been trying to grow it and haven't been successful. I think I'm giving up on it.

Took some of the inspiration I gave to someone earlier this week and made some flavored water with a fresh cukes, tangerines, and pineapple mint.

Hey what do I do with my single 4 inch long okra pod? Can't exactly bread and fry up one.
I'd feed it to the chickens, okra is not my thing ;)

I’ve lost track of my cell phone when it was right on the kitchen counter near where I was standing.
We occasionally have to text a phone to figure out where we put it down. Haven't ever looked for one while holding it though.

I have some stockings ordered to tie up the climbers
Ordered? New? Gotta be somewhere to get them cheaper. Like GoodWill.

I don’t think I want the caterpillars or Japanese beetles that are supposed to come with letting it flower.
Maybe not but the butterflies need them!

I have a cuke soup recipe that we really love:
You might post that on the:

It isn't all baking!!! There is a spreadsheet link on the first page with tabs on the bottom.

I swear this chicken is taunting me. That or she's mad I took her favorite egg-laying spot away. But I couldn't reach that far under the coop, so I threw a board under there to block the spot she was using, and now today she hasn't laid an egg yet and it's afternoon. 🤣

It's so hot outside I'm checking every couple of hours because I don't want any eggs to sit in the heat.

Dug garlic last night, think I have mostly singles it was planted late and has been dry. Already dug potatoes and onions do have some potato onions to dig but they're still mostly green. Been planting black eye peas and a few sunflowers in the empty spots to keep something growing and covering the ground.

It's too hot for green beans to put on, cucumbers and okra look good but haven't put anything on. Tomatoes are growing good, the poor peppers have been attacked by a tomato worm and about have we're stripped of their leaves. Both were planted late.

Hey got a cantaloupe growing!!! Saw it peeking out from under the ever growing vine even though I keep pinching that thing back! Got lots of baby ones too!
Any advice on how and when to harvest it?

Usually they pop off the vine - the stem separates from the vine, when peak ripeness. However, some are prone to splitting - this isn't terrible if you are checking every day or 2x er day - you will catch the split right after it happens, take inside for eating that day or next.

I'll recommend propping up the cantaloupe melons off the ground. I find that even propping up on two sticks is really helpful bc there are certain bugs here that will bore into the part touching the ground, so having even a small amount of separation seems to stop them.

I gather the newer varieties of corn are a bit more forgiving timewise, you can probably walk back to the house and even let them sit for a few hours.
If I had more room I'd plant corn, if only the ornamental kind. I love the look of the stalks, tasseled and green.
I had so much zucchini last year, including ones too big to eat but I didn't want them to go to waste. So I made a huge batch of fritter batter and froze it in containers. It's worked out great, has held up very well to freezing/defrosting.
I copied your cucumber soup recipe and I'm really hoping for a big crop of zucchini, hoping to make a freeze plenty of fritters and chocolate zucchini muffins. And they are great added to meat loaf. I love your Mom's picture, she has a really good eye.

@jerryse, glad to hear you are on the mend.

Critter chores are done and the trees and shrubs all got a good watering. Plan to decant the green compost tea and maybe go do a little fishing.
