What did you do in the garden today?

Acre for me, thanks for sharing! This is my first year and i would love love to grow fresh green beans! Zone 6a i got about 5 cucks and hubby just got done putting them in ball jars with all sorts of things. How exciting! I love growing peppermint, because it always takes and with a big area, i think it is wonderful. Learning as i go. Thank you!
I’m 6A too. Beans are pretty easy. JBs do like them, but just keep an eye out to remove as you see them. Grasshoppers can be an issue at times, but a little Sevin sprayed on them when you notice issues takes care of them usually. I don’t spray unless I’m having too much greenery eaten. We also grow soybeans for eating-just some to freeze for Edamame when we want. Green beans, we’ve tried several varieties of bush green beans. Some “French” green beans had an unfortunate quality of being perfect to pick for only about 24 hours…then they got tough and almost hollow feeling as they quickly lost moisture. But, many types of green beans work well. Buy whatever your local stores carry - they should work out fine. You can still plant green beans this year. I’ve planted in August and gotten a harvest before frost. I just planted round 2 last weekend. I’ll plant round 3 early August, I think.

Welp, the potatoes were a bust. They grew, put on flowers, flowers fell off, couple of weeks later they started turning yellow and dying back. They've been a few days without water so I went to dig them since they were starting to get crispy and got nothing. No tubers, nothing that looked like tubers starting to grow, nada. Bummer. My garden is not doing good this year. Still more than I've ever grown! My biggest garden yet. But just not producing a lot.

Time to yank the mustard and the kale. They're done with the heat the bugs.
It's been a weird year for my garden too... Going from freezing to 90s. Too much rain to none and sweltering triple digits for over a month now. Most of my onions were walnut sized. Went from 2+ dozen garlic plants to less than 10. Zucchini was doing well but all the fruit started dying off with the hot temperatures and lack of rain. Haven't had a female flower in over 2 weeks now... Tomatoes are taking FOREVER to ripen. I've gotten a few cherry tomatoes but no beefsteak or larger sized tomatoes. I've picked only 4 pepperoncinos and only 1 pepper plant out of 6 is actually producing. I haven't dug up potatoes yet. That's a chore for next weekend but given everything else, I don't expect much.

That happened to me year after year with the tomatoes. I only got cherry tomatoes until I used shade cloth this year!

Yeah, I'm going to put up a shade cloth. I have one already... Just gotta figure out how to tie it down. I did start some Sart Roloise tomatoes in a 5 gallon bucket that's under partial shade. I sowed them a week ago and they are already 3" tall and looking very healthy. They are my backup plan... 😂

Nothing too crazy going on today. Headed to the hardware store to pickup a few things. I had an idea of what to do with some extra grape starts we had:

I want to train them along the chicken run and maybe build a cover over the run for it to grow over. We are running out of places to put things, firstly. Secondly it will provide shade during the hotter months and will look better than leaned up plywood against the run. The variety is a mystery: concord, reliant (reliance?), or something else.

Potato’s are flowering, everything is really taking off. Chickens are looking more mature week by week. Greens are up, planting beets today. Chamomile is really getting big! Tobacco is in, only 60 days to maturity I guess. (Little yellow guys by the bucket…they have had a hard start.). Chickens destroyed the bottoms of the lilacs that were inside the fence.

Had some hail this past week but luckily nothing was destroyed. There is some damage but it’s nothing terrible.

All the best.

That's it. i'm buying chain for my shade cloth corners. I made heavy duty coated steel wire connectors and the steel keeps snapping inside the coating (when can't take the strain) and off come a corner. I've had enough of trying to catch a flying corner in high winds.. I chain would be more adjustable on a daily basis too.
Grumble, mumble.
