What did you do in the garden today?

The hornworms had been sticking to two plants...today I went outside and noticed another spot with garden huckleberries was becoming nothing but bare stems. 🤬 Picked all the hornworms I could find and a mystery bug. Today's hornworm harvest.View attachment 3208044Heres the mystery bug...it has a huge black triangular tail that it curls over it's back when scared. Could this be a baby hornworm or does anyone recognize it?View attachment 3208045View attachment 3208046i love hawk moths...but this is too much.
Found pictures of new hatched hornworms and they look just like a bigger hornworm. Surprise surprise 🤣.

Think I found it. Think it's a tortoise shell beetle larvae and a sweet potato pest. Though I don't see any damage in my sweet potato patch...I'll have to start looking for these there.

O I gotta try growing some ❤️
I haven’t tried from seed, only with starts. Home Depot and Lowes carry them in Spring, the earlier you start the better. Feed them every two weeks during the growing season, they like nitrogen! Bunny poop has been the best for me.

Afternoon all. I'm about to lose my mind, I've killed, no lie, at least 40 flies in the house today. We usually have a lot, but 5 was a lot till today! There is not much I despise more than flies & now I'm so creeped out. We cannot figure out where they're coming from.

Pulled the bug netting from the squash. It's busy time at work so the squash need to fend for themselves. & I start the 2nd round of worming for the birds tmrw. & I have spinal injections. Hopefully SVB are done but I have my doubts.

Got another gallon of beans put up for winter. I got a packet of turnip seeds. You should have seen the people at the garden store looking at me like I had 2 heads. 3 people had no idea, one actually asked who eats turnips. :gig

I didn't get anything done in the garden today. We were "supposed" to get some rain, but I bet it was less than .1" so not really any rain. Other areas that need it worse got more, so I should just shut up about it.

Tomorrow will be a choice day to work outside -- low 80s, lower humidity -- so I'll be doing a lot. I'm going to dig all the onions that are falling over; I assume they aren't going to grow any larger. And I'm going to plant lots of greens for a fall crop. I've never done that before, so this will be new for me. Kale, lettuce, spinach, peas, and yeah, I'll give the beets another go.

I think I'll also try a fall garden this year; I'm not 100% sure what I'll plant yet, probably some peas, maybe kale, and a couple other cool season crops. I would do pumpkins, but I think I might be a little late. (Maybe?)

I've heard broccoli can make a good fall crop, does anyone know if this is this true? I have a seed pack but decided not to plant them this year. (I was running out of plant space, but it might work for fall.)

Well went to the garden oddest my Broccoli and cauliflower both bolted but never had decent heads on them.. Those went to the birds. Birds are out moving milling about for bugs ..
I did see my first Roma tomato little one. also the tomatilla has a baby one on it.

What you use for mulch matters lol.
I pick up bagged leaves in the fall and again in the spring when the Live Oaks lose theirs. Then there's the tree guy who brings me a couple truck loads of chipped wood per year.
Edit: I have used this for many years. I used to use LOTS of mulch and after a while I never had to till and always had a great garden. One year I was not so dilligent in the garden and the blaket got really low. Low enough that the nut grass that had been spreading for yeare, unbeknownst to me, Broke through the thin blanket like a lawn, After getting the nut garss under control I now just use enough th keep the weeds down. I still have to pull a few weeds but not many.
