What did you do in the garden today?

doh....my DH isn't going to be very happy with me. My poor chickens & goats have been locked up since Friday due to me being on crutches. I took pity on the poor things and hobbled out there....on crutches...to let them out to free range. I figured that DH could just bring around the 4-wheeler for me to round them up when it's about 7 pm tonight. (That's how I usually round them up anyway so they know to go back in the run when they see me on the 4-wheeler.) Anyway, it just started pouring down rain.... Let's hope it STOPS raining sometime before 7 pm.....otherwise things are going to get really tricky.

Oops! It's pouring here too. I'm hoping it clears up before dark so I don't get soaked. Lol

I use light cotton dish towels myself and they hold in the gas (is it ethaline?) that helps the tomatoes to finish ripening.

Don't forget, you can really cut the heck out of ourself with a mandolin too. This time of year I use it a lot and have so far avoided injury but it really was a great purchase.

I use cut resistant gloves! Never mandolin without them.

What is the purpose of the towels?

On my butternut, I always waited until the vines died back, but DEFINITELY before a hard frost. If the leaves got nipped by frost, I called them done and brought them in. Not sure if the 2-3 I have on the vine will ripen before frost or a ground hog gnaws on them.

It holds the temp and ethylene gas in better. My kitchen is chilly with the AC on at 68. Tomatoes ripen at 68-89 degrees. PLUS it keeps any way ward flies (fruit and house) off, and any caterpillars that hitch hiked a ride in the house IN. LOL.

I use the fish cleaning glove . A coarse woven type . I have one dedicated for kitchen use .

Got the plant stand set up with grow lights. These things are pretty amazing for as thin and tiny as they are. Everything gets good light now even with all the other lights off in the house.

My daughter got me a chain link glove made for kitchen use. It's from Amazon too. I really luv it...its wonderful at cleaning our cast iron too! It's made the same way as the chain link scubbies they sell for that.

Found conk mushrooms growing in the garden. We go up to Mount Lemmon to mushroom hunt and pick apples every year...well, mainly just to play...but an excuse to play is always nice!
Anyway...I always pick a couple conks to play with so I'm really happy to see them growing in my garden. I always let the conks I bring home dry in the garden hoping they'd spread spores but wasn't sure it'd work.

This is what I do with them:
