What did you do in the garden today?

More rain. That is all.

The weeds are exploding but so are all the plants still in the ground. I'm going to check my okra now (it's grown at least a foot in the last 3 weeks!), I think I've got a couple pods ready to come off the plants.
My okra have grown inches over night! Insane growth they are putting on!
But even with 20 plants I have yet to get enough for 2 people a helping!
Gotta be the drought and heat causing that right?

This year mine were decimated by squirrels and a gopher. However... I had some green onions I bought at the store and forgot to use. They got all nasty and slimy. Rather than throw them out, I washed them off and planted them. They grew so big that they flowered. Now I'm not sure what to do with them? Do I leave them to overwinter? Pull them? Are green onions edible at any size? The ones I've always used were the thickness of a pencil. These are probably the thickness of a chair leg. No joke.

I like to leave my onions in the ground as long as I can. I harvest them as I want to use them in cooking and then when the tops flop over I'll harvest the rest and dry them. It's really my preference just to leave them in the garden and use as needed though, lol.

I've yet to fill a quart freezer bag. This is my first year growing okra, and we spent over a month in triple digits, so... Could be a lot of different things. Not least of which is my amateur-ness.

I tried to get to the chicken coop. Y'all. 🤣 I walked on top of the edge of my raised beds (I might be part goat, lol) for thirty feet to not walk in the puddles. I can't find my boots. I get to the coop, see a bit of lumber and think "Oh, let me step on that to balance and get the door open!" It was floating. My foot promptly went into six inches of standing water. *sigh* At least it was just my sandals and not sneakers.

Got one egg for my trouble, will need to go back out when it has had time to drain off a bit to feed the chickens. It was still raining and they still had green stuff to pick through so I decided they could wait a bit. They do have dry places to hang out, but all the dummies were fairly wet.

Okra matures VERY FAST Seriously, an extra day on the vine can make the difference between a nice tender juicy okrie dokrie and something that's woody and like chewing through a pencil. You can kind of tell when you are pinching them off, I use my finger nail, if I can snap it right off, with a push of the nail and a little twist, I got it in time. If I have to spin it a few times, fiddle with it and eventually even maybe have to use the scissors to get it off, then yep, I waited too long. THOSE work best in gumbo's and stuff where you will be boiling them a while to tender em up a bit.

Tomatoes are simmering away.
Pantry is clean for the season.
I plan on some mandarin orange jelly soon too.
Warm but lower humidity, so the 95 temp isn't miserable, but the pollen OMG.
2 of my 5 little squash just gave up and shriveled away this week.

What a gardening year.
Read where California is warning a tomato shortage for fresh and processed products. Not surprised.
Going to grab some butternut squash and dehydrate some for winter.

Okra LOVES water. Not swimming in it but give them a good dousing down daily and they'll be happy. Once they start producing, it's slow but they will get bigger, and make more as they mature. Okra is one of those that continues to produce until it dies off (usually frost gets it). Keep picking the pods as they get to eating size, which is about 3 inches tops, and it'll keep making more !!

I've been freezing mine. So when I cut them before popping them in the freezer I can tell if the knife goes through easy, they're good. If not, I chuck them. I don't have nearly enough to make gumbo with, lol

That's fantastic! Blueberry season was months ago for us!
yah, BB season was like April and May. Glad to get them though no matter when they decide to poke in. Just have to keep the girls OUT of them, THATis the hardest part of growing them. Bugs, Bees, Beetles, No Problem. Chickens....now you have a problem :)
