What did you do in the garden today?

Sunny and beautiful today. I'm getting a couple of indoor chores done, then going out to dig some more dirt.

I haven't seen any sign of deer in the garden since I put up the last row of string/flags. :yesss:
You must have sent them to my place... It looks like they have been munching on my berries and grapes 🙄

OK, after 3+ hours of work outside, I'm pooped... Moved the ducklings from their night pen back to the main duck yard so we can start Day 2 of introductions. Got everyone food and water.

Then I had to reassemble the hose chain so I could water the garden and flower beds. That took over 2 hours alone.

Getting a quick drink before DD shows up. She wants to move her mare to our place so we need to rearrange my garden area in the barn so we can set up another stall. Horses have free access to the pasture but we always stall them at feeding time. For their safety and ours.

Lastly I have to go pick up another 100+ bales of hay today. Did I mention how much I HATE hay day? 😫. Costs went up too... Over $1/bale. I suspected it would. Dang it....

Costs went up too... Over $1/bale.
Not surprising given the cost of off road diesel at the moment. It has finally dropped to just under $5/gallon here. I suppose the farmers might pay a bit less if they get it straight from the distributor and in large quantity.

Nothing happening in the garden today except a bit of ripening on th SM tomatoes. We did get a bit of a surprise thunderstorm last night that dumped 1/2 inch of rain in an hour and a half. Overnight temperatures are cooling down to low 50’s for a few days. I’m just hoping the remaining summer crops finish up before the frost comes in a few weeks.

I'm just a little south of you... just outside of Tucson. Few degrees cooler normally.

I'm glad your getting to garden again and hope everything grows well for you! I moved here from way up north years ago. Gardening here is nothing like what I knew there...lol. Have you gardened in our area before or are you a transplant to the desert too?
Thank you! I'm sure I'll be learning and making mistakes along the way.

We moved to AZ from the east coast about 20 years ago when the kids were young. When is one considered a native? Lol! Landscape plants were my first focus when we moved out here-- what a difference from what I was used to!!

For gardening out here, though, I've only had some herb gardens on & off over the years-- mostly for my pet rabbits. With kids grown now, I have more time for gardening (and for finally having the chickens I've always wanted!).

Photo shows an old herb garden... the most "gardening" I've done since living in AZ, which clearly isn't very much. :)

Now I have 3 elevated beds waiting. Each is 3' x 6.' Not alot, but hopefully enough to get my feet wet.

Except for the perimeter, my heavy soil garden is crabgrass free! I have a pile of weeds waist high, and about 4' square off in the field.

I picked all the tomatoes that looked to be worth anything and pulled the plants. I need to put the cages away; right now they're semi-stacked and leaning against the fence.

I left the hot pepper plants, as they're still ripening some peppers, but other than those, that garden is done for the year. Next chore is to haul up the pile of wood chips and compost. I still find a lot of worms in the soil, so it's still decent, but it's going to get as much as I can give it over the winter to perk it up.
