What did you do in the garden today?

The only people usually buying „grow lights“ here are a certain breed…. I bought some large grow bags for my tomatoes, and after that, received a lot of advertising ( online and per snail mail) petitions for legalizing weed and other stuff like that

I have somewhere around a dozen large loofah. I mean they are easily 6 - 8" in diameter around and 12 - 15" long. I still have a ton of flowers popping up too with another 50 days or so before we typically get a freeze.

I'm letting them turn brown on the vine before harvesting.

Mt loofa were weighing down their arch lol! We have it reinforced with 6 t-posts but the vine is still just booming. I decided the bigger light colored one could be removed and I'm browning them on the porch. I had no idea they were so prolific! I've done absolutely nothing to this vine besides a scoop of good top soil in July and water during the hotter weeks. Definitely excited to have compostable sponges.

Good afternoon folks! Yesterday was what I hope was truly the last hot hot day here but we have had a 100 degree October 1st before (2019! Evil hot). Today is a breezy cloudy with no rain though it looks like it's going to storm. I have lettuce, brussels and kale sprouting, loofas drying and something else but I can't quite remember at the moment lol!

It rained most of the day today, which was glorious. Brought in a cold front, the temp dropped 15 degrees. Hopefully that's the end of the heat here too.

Too wet to venture too far into the garden but I started putting summer things away, the stakes & garden tools & all that. My lettuce stinks, I'm bummed about that. It's just not growing, sprouted, but that's about it for a few weeks.

I pulled the rutabaga today when I found the cabbage worms eating the actual rutatbaga when they ran out of leaves. Half went in the burn bin & the other half are soaking in a bucket - tbd if I'll be able to eat them or not. A couple good sized ones tho! I know better for next year, it's all a learning experience.

I pulled 10 figs yesterday - a good harvest this year. A bit small, but a lot of them so happy there.

Glad this work week is over, I need to lay down some anti-dig apron in the new little run this weekend so the girls can be in there this winter (it's covered). I have a big pile of mulch to move to the big run. Garden only has a couple/few weeks till frost so I need to start planning for garlic & putting everything to bed. & pulling Dahlias. & friends come for annual canning on Wed (tho I'm not canning anything). MIL & FIL come in next weekend. Wedding in VT to travel to. Argh, I'm overwhelmed. I so need to not work a full time job anymore.

I do 90-95% non-processed foods w no added sugar, with a 16/8 fast. Eat as much as I want in the 8 hour window. What a difference! For me the added sugar is the worst. Fruit is all-natural so I eat as much as I want,

Where can I fins more info about this? I need to find SOMETHING that works better for my gut.

Well, it's fall now. High of 59 today, after 79 yesterday. No 70s in sight.

I'll be planting garlic and potato onions soon. I need to figure out where I'm going to put them, as I don't want them in the same bed as before.

I have 2 more rows of potatoes to dig, the Elbas. They have been the biggest and most prolific of my taters for the last two years. This year is the first year I've grown blue potatoes, and Magic Molly is a winner! I'll be growing those for sure next year, along with my regulars of Elba and Kennebec.

A learning experience, for certain.

We dug up the raised bed of sweet potatoes. (24 plants, 12 varieties). We “killed” several with the shovel unfortunately. But, overall a nice batch. Four varieties were mid season, and yes, they will benefit from longer in the ground. But the other eight were early season, ready by approx 90 days (according to the source in Iowa). We were at about 92 days, and they grew under black plastic. There were a few that had nice tuberous roots - even size, etc, so that was good to see.

The last pic are the taters we kept, plastic to keep heat contained, a bowl with water for some humidity. Heater is on “eco” 85F. So, the greenhouses are being repurposed for sweet potato curing!

Just swap the taters and garlic with each other, unless you planted them together. I never did have luck with my taters for some reason. Sweet potatos grow stupid here, regular ones I can't seem to grow, go figure THAT one out :eyeroll:

Imight try taters one more time, ill try your brand see how that goes. TBH I think part of my tater problem was they weregetting too hot. I did get some that grew beautifully, I had them in a super nitrogen rich mulch, but not super well downstairs, methinks phosphates will fix that but am going to wait till after the new year to actually put them in and try.

We must be twins... Lol. Or at least our weather. The temp dropped today like a lead balloon. It's windy, cloudy, and looks like it might storm. I doubt it will but the respite from the heat is most definitely welcome!
