Yeah, APD (auditory processing disorder) really sucks. I wish I was just deaf instead... I do have partial hearing loss too but the APD is far more aggravating. It is a disorder of the nerves that run from your inner ear to the brain. It causes the electrical impulses that run along the nerve to be jumbled. So if someone talks to me, their words sound like a foreign language. I might be able to pick one or two words out of the entire sentence. The rest is just gibberish. I have to think really hard to put what words I DO hear into some kind of mental context and then I might be able to deduce what the person said. By that time, I've missed everything they said afterwards.... This problem happens about 40-50% of the time right now. If there is any background noise in the area or if the person is not looking directly at me (such as talking with their back turned), the percentage goes up to 75-80%. Then there is also the complete inability to locate sound origination. I may hear a sound but I couldn't tell you where it's coming from.... Even if it's right next to me. APD is the real reason why I use closed captions. I'm also signed up for a class this January to learn basic sign language. I'm technically not deaf but as bad as I am struggling, it's probably a matter of time before I truly can't hear at all. Sad because I'm not even 50 yo yet! They can correct APD with an implant but I am not comfortable with someone cutting into my brain. No thanks. I'll stick with sign language and closed captions....
