What did you do in the garden today?

I got my peach from stark bros too. Very happy with it. I would like a pear & a plum (not sure if plum will grow here). But this peach is my first fruit tree so I’ll see how this goes first. I’m horrible at pruning my blueberry bushes so I’m guessing I’ll be just as horrible with the trees too. 🤣

Went outside & filled feed & water & noticed the snowbells are blooming. I adore the little snowbells. 💕

When I put my suckers in water, a lot of them don't make it. I think the harder or older suckers has better chance of survival.

This lady has 100% success rate with cloning using rooting hormone and rock wool cubes. Key take away is cover for 3 days, keep water on bottom, take cover off after 3 days.
Thanks, mate! I will choose some fitting branches tomorrow morning. Hopefully it works.

Q on grapes: spouse thinks they would not do well bc in his experience, all the ones his dad grew were impacted badly from any herbicide use by neighbors. We have farm field in front and behind, with alternating crops, so one always has soybeans, one always has corn …. So we always get round up type Chem sprayed one one of the field (corn), early in the season, and then later in the season the airplane sprayer also sprays the corn (I think with fungicide). So, spouse thinks we can’t grow grapes if they are that sensitive. Thoughts from anyone that grows grapes….
Grapes are affected from many different things. I don’t personally grow them, but many keep them on the fences of their fields where I live. Fungicide shouldn’t be a problem. They’re sensitive to cold weather and blight. Herbicides will definitely affect them, especially when they’re sprayed off a plane, it will reach the plants and kill the leaves.
Grapes are old plants in agriculture, meaning they are sensitive.
If your neighbours spray before the plant grows its leaves (spring) it should be ok.

What kind of peppers?

We usually grow Italian type or pimentos, or Anaheim. We get ripe/ full red ones late July to August. Always full sun all day long. They perform best when they get early morning full sun through mid day (as opposed to not getting early morning sun). They are more shallow rooted than tomatoes, so we keep an eye on the soil moisture. One year voles were active in their bed and the peppers were quite unhappy with all the air around their roots from the burrows, definitely less production.
Thanks for the info! I have Cardinal Sweet Pepper, Sunbright Sweet Pepper, Goat's Horn Hot Pepper, Jalapeño Hot Pepper, Habanero Hot Pepper.
Where did you buy fruit trees from? I’ve only bought from 2 suppliers: Stark Brothers (MO), and Grandpas Orchard (MI).
I bought from Stark Bros. We also have trees coming from the Arbor Day Foundation for doing a survey, so we will be planting and caring for a lot of trees this year.

Found the starter things I needed for seeds scheduled for starting this week!

We might buy 3 more fruit trees…. I think that will round out/fill in all available spots for fruit trees. We are looking at getting 2 nectarines and an additional apricot.

I can't attest to drift from a neighbor, but where I live the city sprays Glyphosate along the curbs to control weeds so they don't have to mow. Last spring they sprayed along my property. My Catawbas were about 40 ft away and greatly impacted. My Concords were about 20 ft further away and not impacted at all.

After that mess, I put up a sign requesting the city to avoid spraying anywhere near that side of my property. We'll see if they listen... 🤞🙏

I picked up my new food grade 55-gallon barrels today. Going to use them to make new strawberry beds that are a mix of self-watering hugelkulture containers. Definitely going to be an experiment but I'm excited about trying it!

From what I can see by the labels, the barrels used to hold crushed tomatillos so they smell a bit peculiar. 😂
