What did you do in the garden today?

I finished cleaning out my deep litter coop for this year, the bottom layer was so rich and dark and composted so deep tilled it into the garden. My soil is a lot of clay so while i'd rather do the no till method, the soil gets so hard and compacted there's no other option. Maybe eventually with continuing to add chicken coop compost it will get to where I don't have to till. It's a large garden so that might take a while. Made rows in the open part and cleaned up the few raised beds and added some chives into the bed with the oregano, thyme, sage and mint. Planted some new things - golden amaranth, broom corn, japanese hull less popcorn, bok choi, broccoli raab, this year in addition to the staples - peas, kale, radish, collards, peppers, a few cherry tomato, basil, parsley, summer squash, pumpkin, watermelon, carrots, marigolds. Didn't plant green beans this year. Trying to grow only things chickens can eat so when I let them in to clean up later in the year there's no problems. I know it's a little early for some of the warmer weather crops for here in western PA but I've got squash seeds coming up from one I left there last fall so even with a few chilly nights the soil seems to be staying warm enough for them to grow.
There's just something so satisfying about looking over a freshly planted garden with all the neat rows (and no weeds!) and all the expectation of the good food to come. I thank God every day for having the space and ability to grow a nice garden and raise chickens.

Morning all. Picked up the 3 pullets last night. Had planned to keep them locked up for a few days but one is kind of a bully & one is really docile so I felt bad & let them out. I'm having a hard time teaching them nipples, they're extra dumb & I can't bend so they have a bowl for now - the big girls will teach them when I integrate I guess. Best laid plans & all...:idunno

DH installed a reverse osmosis system last night - so nice to not have to haul 5 gallon jugs anymore. Our water is undrinkable without RO.

Hoping to get a few cuke seeds in a bed today but my legs are really bad now after doing all the chicken stuff. We'll see later today.

I wish I liked asparagus. 😖

Good morning gardeners. Yesterday was exhausting but I managed to get the new garden space mostly fenced in. I wrapped the chicken wire around the posts but did not secure it or tighten it up. Working in 80F heat this early in the season is tough. There's very little shade up there of course, I planned it that way. LOL. That's all the hard labor I'm doing until Monday. I'm taking a two day mini vacation. I did not do a complete walk around the garden this morning. I skipped the big garden and finally watered my poor hydrangea sprout. I also marked it so I know exactly where it is. DD is picking me up in a little while to go plant shopping. I need more flowers. This will be the first year I'm not planting vegetables in the front yard. Just flowers. Have a great day everyone.

There's a tool that will cut new threads a lot cheaper than paying a plumber to switch out the faucet, so I ordered one. It arrived this afternoon, and I may try it out tomorrow morning before it gets too warm for outside work. My front yard hose is also fused to the faucet. I'm going back to buying hoses with all brass
This might help, this guy filled the threads with a Teflon string......which may prevent the water from getting through.

I went out and watered the stuff that's planted in the garden. And now it's raining. :clap It's been really dry.

After we had such terrible drought in 1988, I have never complained about getting rain. The timing might be bad, we might get too much, but not getting any is way worse.

Awesome! It looks like we have a bunch of expected rain here over the next couple of weeks. I don't think we'll need to water the garden for quite some time. lol

Went plant shopping then the grocery store. I didn’t realize how worn out I am from this past weeks labor. I took your idea @TJAnonymous and picked up a rotisserie chicken and a six pack of Jack Daniels sweet peach drink. Lol! I really do need to water the garden after a quick lunch. We’ve not had any substantial rain for over a week and the weather has been hot, dry and breezy.

Hmm, it says video unnavailble.
Open it in YouTube.
This might help, this guy filled up the threads......

Thanks. Added to my brain and bookmarks.

However, I think the threads will need to be repaired. The plumber is demonstrating how to seal threads that will remain sealed. I want to be able to disconnect the hose in the future.
