What did you do in the garden today?

In grand anticipation of incoming rain, I weeded, mulched and dry fed the garden.
The mulch, which has been waiting for me in the garden for a month and never rained on was wet, full of mold and ants. I have spent the remainder of the morning, despite a shower, remembering how to breathe like a normal person.
Seriously, what is the deal mulch people. I'm in exceptional drought and the bags are so wet inside they grow THAT?!
Oh well.
I also lowered my sewing table 4 inches this morning.
Taking a power saw to an antique library table was a tough decision, but it is my sewing table, and it really needed lowering, it was causing leg and shoulder problems.
Anywho....here's the garden as of the finish of work this morning. I do need to get out there and get some mini pots going for the strawberry runners rooting. These are flamingo strawberries, and very hard to find.View attachment 3536559

I feel accomplished. I found a HUGE patch of mint in my yard, which is great! I love using herbs for my chickens. I also found a way for my broody to be happy, well-fed, and social while sitting on the eggs.

Last year I finally planted the day lilies that were in their pots for several years.

And today, this is the result:

(that's a pollinator fly, good guy!)

I laid down chopped leaves where I wanted this row of lilies, and kept adding to it for a couple months. When I decided to dig the hard ground was softened, and full of earthworms.

Sorry for the washed-out pictures, the sun is very bright today.

We have rain! Morning Gardeners.

Glad you're finally getting some moisture. It's still spitting a little here, but it's supposed to end soon. My garden definitely responded to cooler, wet weather.



Last year's parsley is getting ready to bloom. I should've staked it and tied it up, which I might do today. Looking forward to sampling parsley root in the future.



I don't know what this is. Maybe lavender? It's leaves don't smell like rosemary, that's for sure.

Tomatoes seemed to have doubled in size since yesterday morning!



Beans doing well...


Only two butterbush winter squash seeds came up, out of 6 hills, 18 seeds total. I have replacements started indoors.



Radishes and turnips coming up...

And peas are starting to fill out! Finally! I planted them very close and they seem to like it. Two rows 6 inches apart, seeds spaced about 2 inches apart in the rows...



Carrots seemed to like the rain too. I think they doubled in size in the last couple days.



Lettuce doing great. My favorite is the dark green one. There's not much substance to the light green and red varieties.





One artichoke out of the three is taking off...





Basil and peppers have started to grow, too.



A single summer squash plant is growing as it should, The others are stunted and yellow. I have replacements for those started, too.



Dill is not dilly dallying along...



And the clump of crocosmia is looking healthy.



My squash seeds, in 4 inch pots, on top of an old heating pad to speed things up.

Summer has arrived. Oh well.

This morning I was out in the vegetable gardens before it got hot.

I also pruned & staked the Summer squash some more

After pruning I watered them all.

Beans are a popping!

These are the second (succession) planting, since they are bush beans.

There's a nifty daylilly farm here. You walk around it during bloom, so now, and note down what you want. That list gets turned in when you leave, and during splitting season, they bundle your order, you drive out, pay and pick up your tubers.

I love that idea.

I have some milky-yellow day lilies planted elsewhere in the yard. When I do a little thinning of this long bed I may place a couple of the milky lilies here or there, to add another shade of yellow to complement the others.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I did a scan of the volunteer pumpkin patch this morning. Found evidence of SVB, along with SVB eggs. I cleaned off eggs anywhere I could. I did break off leaves I suspected of having SVB larva due to signs of frass. I didn't have a knife on me to cut them out. Guess I'll have to check them regularly from here on out.
