What did you do in the garden today?

x2. after london, rome and athens I bought a place where I don't have neighbors. I can see a village on the opposite hill but hear nothing. the village my place belong to is about 5 minutes walk from here but I don't see it and hear nothing as well. perfect for me.
Part of me craves being away from people, but it's not practical at this time. We've been blessed with our location, last house on a dead end street. It's an older housing development, most lots are 1/3 acre with at least two driveway widths between structures. The majority of the properties have fences and older tree growth. The lot next to me is covered with hardwood trees and undergrowth, it was never built upon. It's wet, sloped, and would take a lot of site work before building would be possible. It's why I don't free range: we get foxes, opossums, coyotes, and raccoons.

Most everyone on our street is considerate and usually quiet. Their dogs bark, my roosters crow, a nice balance.

Now if the neighbor behind me would quit burning all the time...

What is your humidity?

I can tolerate heat, have been living in the Carolinas for 35 years, but the humidity is what really makes me ill.

Humidity right now is 87%.

Later in the summer it doesn't cool down at night, lows in the mid 80s with high humidity. AC is a must, central air conditioning is a blessing.

It seems that my garden was untouched by deer last night. The 3D electric fence I set up must have worked. This is where I got the idea, and it gives a good explanation of the system.

I did notice that two of my pepper plants were nipped off this morning. I don't remember even looking at the peppers yesterday morning, so I'm sure I just missed it.

Here's a diagram of how the fence is set up, followed by pictures of my setup. My inside fence has an extra hot strand above the 24" line, and on three sides there's a yellow rope strung above that. Don't know if the extra strands help or hurt, or make no difference.

The trick is, mowing. You have to keep grass and weeds off that bottom line.
Although there is no growth here this year due to drought, weeds are still managing it.

We scrapped our electric deer fence due to mowing reasons. It was also 400 yards of fencing.

I wish you the best of luck though.

Humid as all get out this morning.
Not a breath of wind.
Sun blazing, already 77' at 1030am.

Spent the whole day working on the pantry. This morning I'm painting the actual shelves.
I think I might still put contact paper on the top of the shelves to protect from sliding jars. Ya, probably. Easy enough.

I will walk the garden and see if anything needs tending, otherwise it can wait until their morning calcium feed and tie up on Tuesday.

Since it's only about 150' around my garden I can trim under the entire fence with my weed trimmer in 5 minutes. That's what I did yesterday.

Today I have a lot of cleanup to do, mainly removing all the rigged up fences I built when I was trying to contain my chickens in the back yard. And I need to plan out how I'm going to build an additional run for the chickens so they have access to sunshine during the day.

It's supposed to get into the 80's today, so I better get out there now while it's cool and get the hard work done.
