I have the last of the coffee and am out in the garden,, oh what a nice morning!
The cabbage that is ready I’ll take, I have more kale to pick and lettuce, And a few red tomatoes

after working in the garden yesterday morning, I got Fermenting done,

2 jars of carrots, 2 jars of beets with onions, one mustard seed/ dill cabbage and one caraway onion cabbage, I still nab beets and carrots in the fridge to roast in the oven for dinner

I was so bummed today, I have an Asian Pear tree and pruned it back about 70%, the top branch broke off anyway and lost a good bit of the fruit. It is dwarf tree, but I figured 70% would be good, guess not.

Trimming fruit trees or any tree that much can/will kill them.

I was told I have to take off at least 50-70% of the flowers, because it cannot handle the weight of the fruit. These Dwarfs are known to overpopulate with fruit, that is what I was told by the guy that sold me the tree from the orchard? The tree is only 5 years old, could that by the reason? I am by no means an expert (understatement). Or are you refering to cutting back limbs off the tree? I only pruned the flowers. I will only prune limbs in the fall and usually only baby limbs that cross other limbs. Sorry for all the questions.

Yeah, I think that’s way too much weight to take off a young tree. I personally would have only trimmed 50% or less, but I don’t know exactly what you’re dealing with. Got any pics?

Here is my poor tree. The top broke off with three of the highest branches.

All are at the point right now, they are turning color.

Taking too much away from it causes stress but overall it’s still alive and healthy from what I can see.

Those top branches are quite long and that would explain why some of them broke.

Thinning the fruit doesn't harm a pear tree no matter how much you take off.
I'm sad when trees break too; and when fruit is lost.

Skip the next if you want just condolences.

How much light does the tree get?
Do you also prune the branches in the winter?

My grandparents always cut cabbages off the stem and left it. Later on it was covered with baby cabbages. Did you feed the bean trimmings to the chickens? Mine love bean leaves!

I tried that with my romaine lettuce but it didn't have great results. The new growth wasn't anything like the big, lush original plant. I did allow a bunch of lettuce go to seed. Was hoping to see if it seeds itself for next year.

I throw most of the trimmings in the compost pile. Chickens LOVE to dig through it.
