What did you do in the garden today?

I made some adjustments to my earth box design. I used 3 bricks instead of 4, 2 on the ends and 1 in the middle. The bricks were about 4 inches and the 2 net cups I am using for the wick is only 3 inches deep, so I used 1/4-inch wicking ropes to make up the difference. In addition, I was able to straighten and square out the fence cage, it was easier than I thought it would be. I planted 2 Red Snappers in this earth box filled with Miracle Grow potting mix and topped with coco chips.

I decided to run a 5 foot wide nylon trellis net across the top of my Japanese cucumber plants. Hopefully, I get to eat some, I see male flowers, but no females yet. They supposed to be resistant to powdery mildew. We can see the nylon netting if we blow up the picture.

SWOOOOOSH I cut down all the mature sunflower heads today and I am planning on drying them,and feeding them to my herd- of - a - feather! Of course I cut them all down with a machete heehehhe Very fun!! YAY!
And dug purple potatoes as well!
I actually got 3 whole rows of kale this year, I've only got ambushed by Cabbage Butterflies on allllll of my Broccoli and Cauliflower! But my turkeys LOVE those worms heheheh
Good haul and workout today, now it's cold out! Hopefully no freezing rain/frost! Storm's coming! (Although rain is always good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) Bye for now!

I dug about 1/8 of the potato plants. I was AMAZED at the size of the tubers!

I went out just to pick any tomatoes that were turning before the rain hits, and ended up doing more.

After picking around 5 pounds of tomatoes, I looked at my butternut squash patch and all the vines were pretty much dead. So I picked all the squash, green ones and all, then pulled up the vines and threw them to the chickens. Not sure what green, immature butternut squash will taste like, but I'll find out tonight. Hate to let anything go to waste.

Then I cleaned up the squash bed witn my leaf rake and planted half of it with mixed leaf lettuce seeds, and the other half with Danver's Nantes half long carrots. The lettuce should do ok, but not sure if the carrots have enough non-freezing weather.

A lot more the the turnip roots I replanted are sprouting leaves now. Hope the experiment works out and gives me lots of greens to eat.

Still have the one zucchini plant left. Maybe the rain will spur it into giving me a few more squash.

They use a snow type plow to push them into rows. Then a machine with a hay bail type elevator or conveyer puts them into trucks. Guys use pitchforks to stab any strays and toss them in. Amazing to watch.

You're right. I ate a couple of the small green ones tonight and the flesh was light orange. They didn't have the same flavor as mature squash, but had more flavor than a zucchini.

Good morning or night, ended up getting a mountain of sugar cane someone was throwing out. I've always wanted to grow it. Some of the more established ones I'll replant next to the roses. Some I'll mulch and then some I will propagate in pots while part of me wonders how they might go as a chicken roost. I need to expand soon anyways. One way to do it would be to drill holes and insert some rio bar.

Also might try to get a deal on some mulch/veggie mix today to be delivered and get this pumpkin patch ready for mixed squash, gold and black zucchini, hales best rock melon and probably that super annoying african horned melon. Last time I tried it in the NFT and while the richmond cucumbers and the pickling gherkin cucumbers took off, the african ones stayed small and tiny. Quail would look at me with confusion in their beady eyes and think "what the f is this? A munted rasberry?" But who knows. Maybe they might do better in soil.

On that subject. Are cucumbers good for quail as a summer time snack? I would slice the cucumbers length way and lay it on the mesh for them and they'd come over and get into it. Oh the cells that were overseeded with rocket/pak choi are starting to get out of hand as well .

Last week was so busy. DH helped pull the rest of the stuff from the summer garden except the pole butterbeans and a couple of tomatoes. I moved a big hill of compost into the rows and turned it into the soil. Took me a couple days! Me and the shovel.

I planted the seedling I grew under lights inside to protect them from the heat. I now have broccoli, cabbage, collard planted. I started 2 types of mustard and it had started breaking through the soil.
Everything is very well watered with TS Ophelia passing through yesterday.

With the small plants my garden looks naked! Grow babies, grow!
Still want to plant some carrots, garlic and onions. Hoping for a long fall with no early freezes.
