What did you do in the garden today?

If they don't send you into a complete and utter panic attack, yes, I agree. Sadly.....I don't get enough air with wearing them.
I can understand that. I have to stop and go out so I can take mine off for a break.

Good afternoon all. Our temps are back over 100 all week :rant I am so sick of the heat I could scream. Hopefully next weekend will be cool in the mornings. I’ve looked at various ways to trellis dragon fruit, but I don’t like the tower thing and I feel like it would tip over when we get storms. I have a metal plant stand thing that might work if I bury it in the pot. Or I could try some welded wire buried too. There is new growth on the night blooming jessamine and the jasmine too, so cooler temps are helping some things.

Are you sure you don’t have any scratch in your hands when you usually say these magic words?

And I wonder: where do you live?
Big egg town is Barneveld in the Netherlands for me.

Winlock, Washington claims to be the home of the "World's Largest Egg". Whether that's true or not, I can't say. LOL

Early this past spring, I met an elderly couple that was picking up pallets to make raised garden beds. I asked the guy how high he makes his raised beds. He told me that his wife just had hip surgery and could not bend over at all, so he was making these pallet wood beds the full height of the pallet. That's about 43 inches high! He must have seen the surprised look in my eyes, as he quickly added that he had a nice tractor with a front bucket, so filling the full height pallet wood raised beds would not take any time or effort for him.

You do what you gotta do...
I have (2) 4x4 growing trays that were used at pot growing facilities that DH will figure out a way to raise them up to hip height for me. I haven't looked closely at the trays, I assume they have drainage holes. I'm not a fan of using wood around here, it rots too quickly, but maybe PT would be good for this project. I'm also not sure about dirt for them, if my raised bed dirt will work or if I'd need to amend to make a potting soil. Thankfully we have a couple tractors too. Will be a project for next year probably.

The property adjacent to mine has a nice size walnut tree that drops black walnuts on my property. The tree seems to drop more walnuts on my side of the property line, than theirs:yesss:

So, this is the first year we are harvesting these walnuts to process and store the black walnuts, as well as to make a black walnut tincture.

They are all at my house! 🤣 The chipmunks too.
I did a Google search earlier this morning and it seems that this is not really a new thing. Lots of posts where people are talking about squirrels, chipmunks, and birds just disappearing from an area unexpectedly. Most people attribute it to predators (hawks, cats, dogs, etc), natural migration, or lack of resources due to drought, over-population, etc.

I don't feel like any of those high level explanations fits my observation. I already mentioned that predators seems unlikely without me noticing or having equal impact on my flocks.

As for resources, I am surrounded by trees that provide ample housing and food. Last year I easily had well over 2 dozen squirrels just around my house and barn area. Now there are none. Resources haven't changed.

That would leave migration. I can understand bird migration but I've never seen squirrels migrate... Other than maybe to another yard. If there is still plenty of food, water, and housing, I don't know why they would migrate...especially ALL of them.

We've never had chipmunks so I can't speak to them, but definitely it seems like the squirrels all around my property have just vanished over the summer.
