What did you do in the garden today?

I noticed that the young bok choi plants are already starting to bolt. What the heck, I planted the seeds only 4 weeks ago. I saw a small slug snacking (say that 5 times really fast) on the stalk of a marigold plant.

Did too much yesterday. Put new rollers on a sliding door. Fought that all day. Not doing much today. Going to try baking Zucchini. More like bradded cheesy fried. So much Zucchini to use. Someone mentioned Guppies. My outdoor Guppy tubs are doing well. Lots of colors in there.

Nothing of note in the garden, except I did find the remains of the bird the horned owl got. 100% horned owl.

Wireweed...nasty stuff, have alot here as well. That crap will grow under & through so-called weed barrier cloth...ask me how I know. I was pulling up the crap that grows around the firepit, yes I surrounded the pit with a large circular area, weed cloth then small stones a few years ago & was pulling darn wire grass up just yesterday. No gloves. DH exclaimed my hands felt like sandpaper. My reply...gardener's hands. Lol

Where are my pics on this phone...need to organize over 5,000 pics. Well, the only firepit pic I can find right now, here are the 3 amigos visiting, they want me to have a fire so they can bask in the warmth & I think they like the smell of toasted marshmallows, as we had some the night b4 this pic was taken. They're looking at me like, wow, you didn't offer us any, we smell them, toast us some now please. Lol. I know, I've got to be the only nut that has a fox rodent patrol that fortunately leave the flock alone. So there's the firepit, anyway.

What can ya do about wiregrass? It is All Over this area...along with nutsedge & Bermuda grass, which the previous owner planted in purpose. See that green mound lower right in the pic? That is a lovely succulent mound...unfortunately inundated with Wiregrass, nutsedge & Bermuda grass at the time of this photo. Nasty weeds!

Found another pic on my phone. I'm constantly picking the wiregrass out of the stones & that crap goes down into & through the weed barrier. A PITA.

If the (bleep) ever hits the fan, wireweed has a lot of uses from a medicinal perspective and you can (allegedly) use it to make baskets like the native Americans... But in our normal, everyday modern society, it's just a nuisance. I has to be cut with the mower or hedge trimmer. You can't use a string trimmer on it... it's got roots of steel once it's established and it spreads everywhere like crazy. My goats aren't too fond of it and the chickens won't touch it. It's next to impossible to kill.

What a great idea! Of course, it'd need a good, strong lock. Neat, clean, insulated, and with air-flow. Ideally, under a roof, so that it were accessible in all weather.

That look kind of like a pond bio filter, it gave me a lot of ideas. I think if the lava rock was elevated off the bottom, it wouldn't accumulate sludge like it does in a typical flood and drain system.

I wear a simple, dust mask when I do my regular scooping, and a respirator when I clean out the whole coup. They ARE very dust birds, aren't they?

I have an N95 mask that I typically use when I clean the coop... And I kick any broodies out so they don't breathe in the dust either. But yesterday I didn't want to hike back up to the house so I just decided to go without. Probably not a good idea...

Cleaned all the wireweed and invasive grass out of the flower beds by the house. I've had nothing but trouble getting stuff to grow in these beds. I've lost at least 3 rose bushes and 2 peonies in those beds. I've tried chamomile, daisies, calendula, dahlias, ranunculus, and various other seeds. No luck...

Currently I have one remaining rose bush that's BARELY hanging on. I've got a lilac bush that's about 32" tall despite being nearly 4 yrs old. I've got about 10 irises that actually grew despite putting probably 30 bulbs in there. The only thing that has somewhat grown well are canna lilies although the grasshoppers have shredded them to the point that they haven't grown a single flower...

I'm thinking about planting some spare tulip bulbs in there... But I gotta figure out a good summer flower that doesn't resemble wireweed when it sprouts... Something I can clearly recognize isn't a weed

Maybe you should test the soil in that bed. It could be too acidic or too alkaline.
