What did you do in the garden today?

I just about finished double digging the other half of my 2nd 5'x15' raised bed. Got it fertilized too. I had to pick the 9 butternut squash and pull out the vines. I left a big flat leaf parsley plant growing in the corner of the bed.

Asian ladybugs are flying everywhere today. One bit DW. I told her it was because she was so sweet. Some black walnut trivia. The black water from washing the nuts will make worms come out of the ground. Can be collected for fishing but rinse them off as the juglone can kill them. Would make good chicken treats. Grandma made her own black walnut stain from the hulls. They built their house from Sears before 1920. Stained all the woodwork walnut. Some people make black walnut tincture. Not sure what is for.

I wonder how effective the black stain would be as a wood preservative for preventing rot and insect damage?

48 forecast as the low last night, for Grand Rapids, MI. It was 44 at our house. And that equals a slight touch of frost on my uncovered bean plants down in the garden. They're still ok, and I'll need to cover them in a couple of nights. I don't know if the beans will eventually ripen, or if they'll freeze first.

The experiment continues!

Such a great plant to have! I love the flat leaf parsley. It grows so well alongside everything .. mine has self-seeded between the raised beds. I love adding the mature leaf to my cups of tea.

The tincture is used if you think you have parasites. you would feed the hulls to hogs if you needed to worm them.

Noticed a squirl acting off near me shed, sure enough it had chewed a hole through the soffit and had found my hopper full of hulled and washed black walnuts that have been stored waiting for me to get them shelled. Got the hole fixed and found that the squirl had made a nest in-between a group of unused bee hive bodies, it had damaged three of the boxes and mulched several frames. Crazy creature.

I came across this on yt. Has anyone used baking soda / bicarbonate soda in the garden? I'm keen to do a test patch this summer.
