What did you do in the garden today?

Still no rain here. It's supposed to be 80 for Halloween! Man, usually kids are wearing winter coats over their costumes.

I got the garlic in, got compost on it, mulched & watered. & then covered with hardware cloth - not playing with the critters.

I am so tired. My kitchen flooded this morning.... I don't want to get into it. This isn't the first time.... I laid into DH about it this morning. I was livid. And you know what you don't say to an angry wife...."you're being dramatic" I WILL END YOU!

Yes, I am dramatic. But it's completely justified.

A lot of my garlic is coming up. The early italian is the most grown. Followed by inchelium, then red toch, and silver white is lagging, but it has roots.

I have caught 5 gophers this week. 2 in a tunnel next to my apple tree, by the pumpkins and berry pots. 2 in a tunnel in one of my raised beds that the hardware cloth rusted out on this year. and 1 in my newest ground level bed where my butternut squash are. DEATH TO THE BURROWING DEVILS!

The ones that were under the apple tree, I returned those to the yard they came from, right over the fence. Take back your vermin you refuse to kill yourself. Neighbors with joining fence #1 to the East. Lets just say they're the NE neighbor.

The ones in the raised bed... I like those neighbors too much to return their gophers over the fence, so I leave them on the ground for their cat to bring back to them. Those are the neighbors to the south.

The one that was in the lower bed.... I imagine it came from the neighbor to the south, but I threw it over the fence to the neighbors to the NE by the apple tree. There's several other gophers of theirs in my orchard that I haven't tried to trap yet, so, they get a bonus gopher.

My neighbors to the north.... they chase their gophers into my yard with those sonar spikes... I toss their gophers back even if I know their dog is out. I could aim for their hot tub or pool, but I don't. I think about it sometimes though. When they're talking outside of my bedroom window at 3am. One time they almost burned down their house by disposing of paint cleaning chemicals improperly in their trash. I have lots more stories about them, but there's a saying that if you don't have anything nice to say.... But. Gophers. Kill them yourself or I will and I will give them back. I'm not going to bury your problems for you. Lol

Mind you, when we moved into this home, I killed 47 gophers in a calendar year. Year two, 29. Since then, I was down to 18ish a year. This year, since gaining new neighbors on all property lines in the three years. I've gained rats, and upped the number of yearly gophers back yearly as neighbors changed. This year I'm back up to 32.
Sorry about the flood. But I was cracking up at your gopher stories. We feel the same way about the mice & rats we catch - DH throws them up against the neighbors fence (the one that dumps the bird/turkey/bear/fox food on the ground). He has much more restraint than I, I would toss them into their yard.

I put mouse poison in my car. Hate to use the stuff, but I really have no choice after they chewed a hole in my gas tank. DH is almost done with the electric fence for around the RV, can't wait to fire that up.

The spinners I hung all over the coop have kept the woodpecker away, so yay there! Gonna wait till it warms back up to patch the holes.
 
I picked another 3 chard leaves for my lunch. And I put some compost on the bed that will be home for the multiplier onions. I think I'll plant the onions tomorrow.

That would be another item crossed off the list, and another bucket out of the mudroom!
 
Today, I decided to use the pickled eggplant slices that made a while ago. It tasted like a 50/50 salt/sugar vinegar pickle, but it was too chewy, so I rinsed it off and mixed it with olive oil and roasted it in the oven for 10 minutes. The texture and taste came out a lot better. At least, I will be able to use them in my sandwiches or as a side dish.
 
I waited until my second seedless papaya was yellow near the stem before skinning it with a potato peeler. However, the tip part of the papaya ripens before the stem part, so it was hard to peel without damaging the flesh. The flesh was a lot softer and sweeter than the first ripe papaya which had a little tint of green near the stem part. By waiting until the stem part turns a light yellow, I will be able to cut it in half and eat it with a spoon like a regular papaya. I ate the second papaya before I could get a picture of it, so this is a picture of my seedless papaya tree and first papaya. Since this papaya was a volunteer, I will call it vanilla papaya because it has under tones of sweet vanilla flavor. There will be a few with a couple of viable seeds. This is not my first time growing these.

I don't believe I've ever eaten a papaya. Guess I should try one sometime.
