What did you do in the garden today?

Crazy windy out there today, with lots of pollen and dust blowing around.
Minimal chores, but I did manage to pull all the leaves off the horseradish plants while I was out there. Three heaping garden wagon loads. It was silly.
Now I can see where to dig my roots for harvest.
I'll clean the perennial beds and the remaining leaves, yet to fall from the blackberry, in the spring.

We finally had a freeze here. We've had heavy frost, but it finally got below 32.

I cannot believe that the bean plants are still hanging on! I took a picture, but haven't downloaded it. There is some frost/freeze damage, but the plants are STILL ALIVE!

Covering them with two layers of sheets has made the difference. I think one layer would not have been enough.

Please ripen those bean pods, so I can stop doing this... :gig I'm going to get two nights off in the upcoming couple of 72-75 degree days accompanied by 50+ degree nights.

Good luck!

The other thing I did was sink 3 T-posts on each side of the black raspberry row. I ran some 16 gauge wire along one side at the top of the posts (then ran out of wire) and put the canes over to keep them off the ground. And out of the way.

I'll be going to TSC tomorrow to get another roll of wire so I can go all the way around, and then again half way up the posts.

I read to prune the canes to "a manageable height," and they were still all over and in the way. This should keep them more "manageable." I had pruned them, but they were still pretty long, and several of them had rooted at the ends. I moved the rooted bits into the bed; we'll see how they do come spring.

Oh, the other other thing I did was clip off all the dead asparagus to about 4" above the ground. I hauled them up to the burn barrel, and after we get some more rain, I'll burn them. A friend said they always do that, and they rarely have any issues with asparagus beetles.

So, why not give it a try? I'd love to have no asparagus beetles to hunt next spring... that can take a generous half hour every day.

Watered my green beans that I have still limping along. Dreaming and planning for next year's garden already. My garden was so good to me this year even in this dry summer/fall. I need to get going on tilling another bed but the ground is so hard I have to pitchfork first. I just have a small electric tiller and I'm not sure I have it in me to pitchfork that bed.
