Bought some local hot weather seeds: Gila River kaña (sorghum), red malabar spinach (not really spinach but a climbing leafy vine), okite and golden amaranth for the chickens. W'pegi bawi and U'us mu:ñ (beans), beit alpha cucumber, and chimayo (Mexican cantaloupe) for us (and probably the chickens, too).

That will do it! Be safe out there in the sun! It's no joke.Well, Central Coast Cali. But I was outside from 8:30 until 4:10 pm. I would have been out longer except my alarm to go pick up my kiddo set me straight. I'm a weird mutt. Lol![]()
Everyone I know just feeds it to the chickens straight from the garden, or lets them eat it in the garden. No one has had any problems that I know of. I'll err on the side of caution and bake it if any comes up. Haven't had a lot of luck in that part of the yard.is amaranth safe for chickens or it has to be baked first?
No kidding. Seems I'm going to need to start using sun screen every day again. Just in case it's warm enough to take off my coat. That will do it! Be safe out there in the sun! It's no joke.
We were starting to warm up to the mid 80's. Now over the next few days it will be down to the high 30's again. Mid TN weather.![]()

I bought a soil testing kit. I hope that will reveal whatever deficiencies there are. Otherwise I'll have to send a sample to a lab. We don't have any soil here, just desert sand, so we have to make, or buy, soil if we want to grow anything. It's an annoying process.![]()
Totally safe to eat, for chickens and us. I chop some leaves into my salad and their greens. Never tried doing anything from the seeds yet, but its on my list to make flour from them one day.is amaranth safe for chickens or it has to be baked first?
