What did you do in the garden today?

Doesn’t Washington pretty much float most of the year?
I'm in Western WA and all I know is the grass quits growing around the end of July and all I have to mow are the weeds. I've been having to water my garden the last few weeks. Gave it a good soaking this morning.

I took the boards off the the carrot seeds I planted to water them and noticed a few spindly plants coming out of the ground. I left the boards off.

I need to cut down all of the bok choi plants since they're all starting to bolt. More greens to eat!. Or maybe I'll try to ferment them like sauerkraut with some kale and see what happens.

I planted some last year but didn't really get a bunch of big ones but I did get some. I planted them in pots this year so I am hoping that I get a good crop because I am giving them to my mom and daughter in law. I don't eat them but I have a green thumb so it's pretty much up to me to do the garden for everyone in the family.
I’ve been planting them for a couple of years now. Bought my first slips from Gurney’s and have grown my own slips from previous crops ever since. This has got to be, at least in my experience, one of the easiest crops to grow. Plus the fact that once you get a crop you’ll never have to buy them again. Last year we harvested 160 lbs, we eat a lot, give some away and use the smaller ones to propagate new slips for the up coming year.

Just stopped at a brand new garden center/bistro/grocery/decor roadside “produce stand” that just opened a mile or two from us. A weird combination in my view, but a nice upscaled place. Anyway, they had a dozen free ranged, organic eggs for $9.00/ dozen, made me glad we have our own chickens. In case you’re curious the place is ‘Tidal Roots’ in Hebron Maryland.

does anyone do sweet potatoes?
I have some growing in pots and I have some growing in a 4ft x 4ft bed on the ground. I bought an orange flesh sweet potato from Walmart, and I planted the tips of it, and it grew and produced nice sweet potatoes. I saved the line with slips. This is my third year growing them.

I am also trying out a local favorite called Molokai Sweet potato this year.

I’ll have to look at the Molokai. Have you wver considered the Covingtons? These are what we’ve been growing.

Yes!

Hot, sun, water! They WANT to live. You can hardly overwater them in the first month as they are getting established. Do not plant them too early..under 50F at night makes for a sad sweet potato. They will wilt in the fall when touched by light frost. We pre-warm the soil with black plastic so it’s nice and hot. Then we don’t plant until June when it’s nice and hot. Our first frost is usually mid to later October so we dig them up before them. Just snip off the above ground vines where they attach to the ground and roll up like a carpet.

Sweet potatoes are cured at a warm (85-95F) temp for about 10 days with high humidity. I set up the portable greenhouses, tent with plastic, add a portable heater with a pan or two of water, load up with sweet potatoes.
