What did you do in the garden today?

Got 9 of the rose bushes pruned before the rains came. I'll finish the rest of them tomorrow with the lilacs. Didn't do them last spring and they've gotten so out of control! I have little jalapenos already. Seems like I barely got them in the ground, can't be more than a couple weeks ago, they're less than a foot tall, and they're already putting out peppers. Weird. And the huckle berries too. Covered with fat green berries already. Going to be a strange growing season this year.

So, not sure what is going on behind the scenes - the older (70s?) couple that were running it for a long time seems to be passing the reigns to the younger gen (mid 30s+), so maybe that’s contributing.

this is typical. younger people want to make money no matter what. that's why many family businesses close all over the world.

Can't imagine A garden without my sweet potatoes. They grow well here with our hot summers.
How do you store yours? We’ve been storing in our garage on screened tables. Even though the garage has heat and air we don’t run it all the time to keep the place at a given temperature. During winter the garage rarely goes below 40F and by spring the potatoes are disappearing, however we do notice some spoilage and new new growth showing up by then. Not sure we’re storing properly.

Don't know if I store "properly" either. After curing, I keep them in baskets on shelves in my mud room. The shelves are by the door with the cat door so its the coolest place I have. I select the ones I want to use for making slips and store those in my crisper drawer of the fridge along with my seeds. We all have to work with what we have, and thank goodness there's probably a thousand ways to do any one thing even if its not optimal. Sounds like what you're doing is working for you if you're only getting A little spoilage by spring, but maybe yours are getting just A little too cold?

Crisper door for the ones you want to use for slips? Sounds like something I’d like to take a stab at.

What hatchery was it?
It’s a small hatchery in business for about 100 years. Their website is about as low tech as you can get, without even pictures. And, in fact, 1-2 years ago they changed their web address, but it’s really hard to find their site now, even for someone like me that has been on the new site before.

Oh well, I can drive to Meyer, although a bit far, or to Mt. Healthy hatchery. Except Mt. Healthy was linked to two Salmonella outbreaks several years ago (pre-Covid) so I’m hesitant even though it’s been several years and it’s not like Salmonella doesn’t show up at other hatcheries …but, I don’t want it in my flock.

I cut all the bok choi plants from my garden this morning. I ended up with 800 grams, which I'm preparing to ferment into bok choi sauerkraut. Never heard of doing that, but it's a type of cabbage so it should work. It sure is green!

Isn't mt. Healthy the Amish run hatchery? Our stockdales uses them, and I've got some incredible chicks from them. Even my sex links have lived 10 years. Can't say if it was diet and care or their genetics, maybe a bit of both, but dang they've been some great chickens.
