What did you do in the garden today?

I have not had a ‘garden’ at the barn since I bought the chooks over 4 yrs ago. They managed to completely finish off 4 Beef Steak tomato plants (just left me the stalk) in the space of a couple of hours while I was hard at work inside the barn.

Couple days after that they finished off my petunia hanging baskets when I took them down to water and didn’t rehang immediately. They also trashed my geraniums. Brats!

This year I will enclose the area in front of the barn where I plant stuff, and hope the brats don’t fly in and ruin them!

I usually plant a wall of pole beans, it keeps the west wall of the barn cool helping keep the inside from heating up. So today’s work is to get the beans in the ground, and the tomatoes also, I will need a plastic covering to protect from frost - easily done with some clear plastic.

Hopefully in a couple months I will have some fresh produce.

Had to laugh at this. One of our gardens is "hidden" from our chickens. We call it the garden that must not be known :).

Sorry to hear they got your tomato plants luckily our flock doesn't seem to bother tomatoes....so far!

Oh that’s a great name for The Secret Garden.

I am keen to get the beans in the ground and start the wall of beans, it gets so hot in the barn in that north west corner with the summer sun.

What this variety called? I'd like to give it a try. Thanks.
Baker Creek, call it Giant Bullet Head winter melon. The stem above the melon is really strong. I tie and half hitch a cord around the stem and secure it to a wire, fence or trellis. They are monsters, but we can pick them whenever we want like 10 inches.

If I was going to use cross wood stands like in the video, I would trim off all the side branches and coil the vine until a fruit set, then I would hang it on the wood stand with a cord.
