What did you do in the garden today?

I think the buds are swelling on these sweet cherry grafts. Hopeful. Plum graft is growing.

Just put in my order for my Jumbo Cornish Cross Meatbird Chicks from McMurrey. They only have 3 hatches available unless I wanted them after mid-September.
I guess I'd better just do it now. They'll be coming the week of May 26. My husband just let us buy a Yardbird plucker (big investment) a couple months ago. We've been plucking the "hard" way for the past 15 years...

We’ve got close to 2 inches of rain since yesterday evening. No gardening but I did notice more peas breaking through the dirt/ mud. On my way home from the grocery store I stopped at the greenhouse and picked up more flowers, lettuce starts, parsley, thyme and strawberry plants. They’re ever bearing strawberries and a pack of 6 seedlings was only $4.

We got frost last night. I covered the blueberry bushes, and they're fine. I *think* most of the cherries made it through ok. Some of the wild apple blossoms are toast, but not all.

The tall, spindly asparagus folded in half. The stuff I was able to cover with leaves is fine.

We had asparagus with dinner tonight. Yum!

The chickens had grubs that I dug up as I weeded. :sick

Not much gardening today. I picked a lot of leaf lettuce and got it washed and in the fridge, then watered the garden and did a little hoeing.

The chickens were more work. I finished hauling the last 4 wheelbarrow loads of old woodchip bedding down to the woods and spread some straw in the secure run.

After removing the woodchips the jump down from the coop was too far for a couple of the chickens so I put together a ramp from a section of pallet. The old girls aren't as agile as they used to be. LOL

I've never had any trouble growing cantaloupe until this year.... I planted 5 starts in a leaf mulch in my in-ground garden weeks ago. One is basically dead. The other 4 haven't grown at all and are very yellow. Either they don't like the leaf mulch or the stupid amount of rain we've had is causing problems at the root level. Maybe both.... 🤷 Looks like I probably won't get any this year...
I start cantaloupe, squash, and cucumber seeds in the garage on a heat mat. As soon as they sprout I plant them out. No hardening off because first set of true leaves haven't started, but get good germination on heat mat. My soil is too cold sometimes otherwise.
