What did you do in the garden today?

Forgot - saw these auto water, reservoir system planters at home Depot today, rather larger, 80$ standing height.
I know some make their own, but for those that can't

I watered my garden since it's so hot and dry. The newly planted seedlings don't have the roots yet they need in this heat! First day of letting the chicks in with my chickens. We did the look but don't touch method for two weeks where they were in a small run inside the run. They have two spots they can get back in to their little run safely that the big girls can't fit through. It ended up going pretty well. Opal got two tail feathers plucked out, but that was the extent and the chicks learned to stay away from bigger girls. Helped so much to put lots of junk cluttering up the run.. I've learned so much on this site!

Called Stark. Order should be shipped this week. 🙄🙄🙄.

Called Gurneys bc the two types of potatoes we bought have very poor germination. We’ve grown both before (other suppliers), and have grown potatoes for years, so we have experience.

Potato bed has 3 sections. Front section is 8’x4’ with Purpke Viking, planted 6-7 weeks ago… pretty sparse. Middle section approx 5’x4’ is a yellow potato (blanking on variety name rn) also planted same time and also sparse. Back section at red potatoes bought at farm store and planted approx 3-4 weeks ago and they look great.

Also the Itoh peony I bought and planted several weeks ago has no life at all -I’ve been checking, hoping for signs of life. But, none has appeared.

I got refunded for them and bought two rose hip roses -we have one and it’s healthy and attractive. Then I bought a new climbing rise bc the one I bought from gurneys last year didn’t survive the winter. And the CS lady was already acting annoyed that I wanted a refund in the potatoes (she tried to ship me more potatoes but I declined bc it would take almost two weeks to get here and I’m not planting potatoes in June), so I didn’t get into the dead rose.

Nothing in the garden, again. Oh joy, now instead of another day of rain beginning in the afternoon, it will begin by 10. Not only has the pond filled up but overflowing. Oh well, the Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.

For the garden: plant more seeds in containers so they won't drown or get washed away.
We are still blessed.

I realized that the 6 to 8 inch layer of woodchip mulch covering my tomato/pepper/bean bed was insulating the ground and preventing it from warming up. I removed seven 30 gallon storage totes of the woodchips and used them to replace the straw in the chicken coop and secure run area. I decided that I hate straw bedding. The chickens don't like it either.

I can probably remove another 10 totes worth of chips from the bed while leaving enough for a thin mulch layer to prevent weeds from growing.

Good afternoon gardeners. I’ve been really busy these past several days. Mothers Day started with a clean up in the old chicken yard, then a mowing and some trimming in the front yard and old chicken yard. Then I smoked chicken and ribs on the charcoal smoker/ grill. Yesterday I planted the new strawberry plants in the grow bags and finally got one of the 4 x 8 beds planted with dinosaur kale carrots and lettuce. Today I planted the parsley and thyme starts then got the paths in the big garden weed whacked as well as the path of the slope and over to the grapevines. I still have more trimming to do in the front yard. We’ll see. We did have a light frost overnight Sunday into Monday morning. Fingers crossed that’s the last one. I plan on prepping the rest of the garden beds but holding off on planting the warm season crops until the last week in May. I have two potato plants coming up and the beets are nearly all up. The really good news is it looks like my orange azalea is getting ready to bloom. Yay!

The gnats are driving me crazy trying to work outside every day. I bought some head nets, it has never been this bad here ever. Flies and ladybugs all winter and now the plague of gnats.
All it takes is one annoying aggressive gnat targeting your eyes to make it unpleasant... can't imagine a bunch of them! I bet they're still annoying buzzing around your ears even w/the protective netting:(.
