What did you do in the garden today?

I take a 5 gallon bucket and fill it with weeds or even some grass clippings. Deep rooted weeds like dandelions are supposed to be better because the plants pull up nutrients from deep underground that are depleted closer to the surface. Fill it with water and let it ferment, the longer the better. I started my bucket several months ago.

For me the mess starts bubbling after a few days, sometimes so much that it tries to push the weeds out of the top of the bucket. Strain some out and mix it one part tea to 10 parts water, more or less, and pour it around your garden plants. I usually water it in after the fertilizer has had a chance to soak in a little.

The theory is that the fermenting weeds release minerals, nutrients and nitrogen into the water. Whether or not it's true or really works, I couldn't say for sure, but I believe the theory of it is sound.

And if it works, it's free organic fertilizer! Can't beat that. I'm pretty sure it helps my plants.

that's the only thing people used in the past (besides manure). they grew veggies on the same plot without any issues and didn't destroy soil.

Look at how fast she’s growing

Different tea recipes for Different times of the year. Yours looks like a recipe for flowering but it's incomplete. I've not looked into fermentation of the tea but I've read multiple sources saying to only let it sit 24ish hours before using because anaerobic bacteria will start to grow. I use all natural teas I make from stuff around the farm

My recipe for vegetative growth: in a 5 gallon bucket put 1 handful of green material like lawn clippings, 1 handful of brown like old hay, a handful of crushed fruit or molasses, 1 cup of aged manure, 1 cup of good dirt. Ad water to the top and stir every couple hours, use after about 24 hours. Should smell earthy but not sour or off-putting

My flowering recipe: in a 5 gallon bucket use a handful of green like grass clippings, a handful of brown like straw, a cup of manure, a cup of good dirt , a couple forraged mushrooms crushed, a handful of fruit crushed, young mullein chopped fine, dandelion flowers and roots, a handful of other random wildflower petals, some eggshell if you like, a splash of urine if you like. Fill with water and stir every couple hours fir 24 hours...

I feed them about a gallon per large plant once a week. You can also use this on the leaves of the plants in the morning but I never have

Strain or just be careful not to poor chunks all over lol

Pea pods are forming! I also saw a hoverfly buzzing around them yesterday. ❤️

New cucumbers are starting to get their real leaves. I don’t think the squash seedling is dead yet, but I’m leaving it under the cloche while the temperature is cooler. Can’t check the melons because I put them in with the peas; the idea had been that by the time the melons took off the peas would be dying off and leave lots of nitrogen for them, but with the first set of seedlings dying off and having to restart them there is now a wall of greenery blocking them from sight, so now I get to worry that they aren’t getting enough sun. 😮‍💨

Potato leaves are getting tiny holes in them. Not sure what is doing it. 🤔 Plants still seem to be doing well otherwise.

Side note, I’d thought my Trail of Tears beans were just taking their time because of all the cool weather. Turns out they were growing, they just decided the potato plants made a better trellis than the trellis! But a few of them have made their way to the actual trellis now.

Cayenne peppers still forming and it looks like I’m going to have to isolate the sweet peppers soon so they don’t cross pollinate.

Onions are just okay, they haven’t really taken off but they haven’t all died either and I got to harvest trimmings a couple times so far.

I also still have some unbolted lettuce, which is frankly bizarre this far into the season. I should take advantage of that and make a salad today. 🤔

I've read that beans will have stunt growth if planted near onions and garlic. you will tell us if that's true.
I had onions in one of my bean planters last year and they were stunted compared to the ones that were onion-free.
