What did you do in the garden today?

I grew this bucket of black rice from this year's plants that were grown in fabric pots. I grew my first black rice seeds in a bucket without any drain holes, and I kept the water an inch above the soil with a few mosquito fish and they did way better than this year's grow bags, so I decided to use a bucket and keep the water below the surface of the soil, so I don't need to worry about mosquitoes. I am treating it as an ornamental plant and a possible future expansion experiment.

I might need a rice hull machine if I get into it.

I've grown my own wheat, my own corn, potatoes, etc but I've never even thought of growing my own rice!!!! What a fun project!!! How did you get started on that?

I gave the beets a good shot of the stinky weed tea fertilizer yesterday and the tops are looking pretty good. The roots still seem kind of small, but that's ok. I like eating a few beets, but I like the beet greens better.

The variety is one that's kind of a dual purpose beet, developed for making good quality leaves for greens and OK roots. I don't remember the name. I'll need to thin them out soon so I'll have a few of the greens to try.

I refilled the weed tea bucket with water again and stirred it up so there will be more to use later.

What is weed tea??

Well, I decided to suck it up and brave the sticky heat to get a few things done.

Checked the squash plants. Pretty sure some SVB managed to get through somehow. Plants aren't collapsed but my spaghetti squash and 1 cushaw have turned yellow and looking suspect. I found at least 4 pumpkins growing and 2 watermelon. The only things still flowering are the pumpkin. Didn't see any flowers on anything else... Not even buds. 😑

Picked around 6 - 8 cups of blackberries. Going to make more syrup and maybe some jelly... I also picked a collective cup of blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries. Might make a triple berry syrup with those...

Also picked a bunch of green beans, blanched them, and freezing them.
