What did you do in the garden today?

Harvested another tiny handful of peas this morning. Until this year I didn’t realize just how much of a water hog my peas were, they’ve usually done decently well but this year they have been so happy with the near-constant rain and their planter is the only one drying out despite daily watering.

I did catch a glimpse of both melon seedlings today. They’re still alive! 🎉

Sounds like you need to dry some milk! 😜

I keep powdered milk in the pantry. I bought mine though. That trigger finger is really getting itchy... Maybe they will have an independence day sale... Your freeze drying content is very encouraging. 😁
I have. In fact I have freeze dried batched of powdered milk, But I don't drink milk so I get those kiddie sized bottles for cooking.
I don't want break into my dried stash to make more dried stuff.

I don't even eat mashed potatoes, DH does.

The non-stop rain for last 1.5 months caused no strawberries for several days so far. Now it's so hot, some of my young fig plants are fried to death. Water melon plants are struggling too from the cool rain- super hot weather cycle. Most cherries rot and fell with only 3 left on my tree. On the positive side, tomato and squashes are all happily growing. Also, Korea gaint pear tree is loaded. Overall, this is not a very good year for my gardens.

Got my first melon cucumber, it could have been picked yesterday, but i didn’t see it.

Cease fire was announced, and I saw three bees today.

Edit: I ate it, it was just right.
Hopefully, the peace would be there for a long time. It must be hard for you and your family.

Never heard about melon cucumber before. It looks nice. I guess you have fig wasps there? Then you should have great figs to eat! There are lots of nice figs from middle east. I'm considering to add Hmadi and Israeli Black to my collection.

Green beans seem to be stuck at 4 inches tall. They do NOT like the heat. I'd normally be harvesting by now.
Tomatoes are appearing.
Fed one hornworm to a chick, who didn't quite want it, but ate it so the others couldn't have it. LOL.
No chicken in my flock wants hornworm. All my chickens looked at it and turned their beaks away. They even don't want earth worms. Right now, I get lots of complains about no strawberries for a while and not all chickens love raspberries. They are just too spoiled.

The rain keeps making the carpet of weed seeds blown in by the wind germinate. Been hoeing every few days, alternating between rows, to keep ahead of them. Soon enough the plants will be so big and thick I won’t have to week so much. Until then I’ll be working the top inch of soil. I’m seeing earwigs, Japanese beetles and aphids here and there. Ladybug larva and pupae have also been spotted so I don’t really want to spray the plants… maybe I’ll move the ladybugs elsewhere and then spray.

Tomato plants are big enough that I’ve stopped removing buds and I’m seeing a few with baby tomatoes growing. Squash plants are also developing tiny male flowers but no sign of female buds yet.

Melon cucumber is Faqous, it’s a melon that you eat young like a cucumber. And yes, we have fig wasps. I’m growing a green variety of figs, but my tree is like 4 months old, so not this year, I won’t have a nice harvest. Hahaha
Thank you, hopefully there will be peace, right now it’s just a ceasefire.

I picked a nice mess of peas from the garden this morning. I have two different varieties growing, snap peas and snow peas. The snap pea seeds were old and didn't germinate well so I reseeded those rows with snow pea seeds.

I have another double row of snow peas in a different location. Guess I'll eat a few and freeze the rest. There are lots more coming on.

And I cut most of the leaves from my last collard plant but didn't have the heart to pull it up just yet. I'll probably let it continue growing until it bolts.

The beans growing next to the onions and shallots don't seem to be having a problem growing, yet anyway.

I mixed up BT and sprayed the cabbages last night, but I'm thinking some of the damage might be from slugs. And the beans near the woods are getting kind of chewed on which might be slugs too. I have some Sluggo I'll sprinkle down today.

ETA: I got a quart bag of snow peas and a pint of snap peas in the freezer. No blanching, just picked them clean and froze them dry and whole. And 1.5 quarts of chopped collards in the fridge to cook later.
