What did you do in the garden today?

Well, the only fertilizer I've used on my onions, shallots, beets, kale and cabbages this year is the stinky weed tea and they're all doing great. Are the plants feeding off of the inch thick layer of chicken run bedding I added to the garden last fall too? Probably, but logic tells me that there also has to be some benefit from the weed tea. And it hasn't killed or stunted any plants, so that's a plus. LOL

Have you ever smelled this fertilizer? It smells pretty awful too. It's what I used to fertilize my peppers, tomatoes, zucchinis and cukes.

It is good fertilizer we have used it for years!

I’m dealing with cabbage moths does planting herbs near them actually work or is that bs to

x2
I have a cabbage moth problem too and since they're butterflies it's relatively easy to keep away. Just some netting works great. Whenever I don't do it for like a day, my cabbages instantly get ravaged by the caterpillars. It's crazy how much newborn bugs eat! They eat entire plants in days!!!
I found a new way to control cabbage moths. I gave each of my grandkids a 4 foot long switch from a tree branch and told them I'd give them a quarter for each cabbage moth they got. The oldest grandson knocked 2 out of the sky so far.

I have found the easiest way to control cabbage looper moths and worms is by using bacillus thurengiensis bt for short. It is a certified organic pest control. Works on cabbage looper worms, tomato hornworms, tent caterpillars and more. Non toxic and it works great!!! Highly recommended!! Tent caterpillars too!

I’m way behind on this thread. Heatwave over. We were treated to much cooler temperatures for a couple of days. I wasn’t able to get the corn patch prepped. Too hot for that. Just keeping the chickens cool was tough enough. My 7+ y.o. RIR hen finally succumbed to the heat. She was quite a hefty girl at near 10 pounds. Digging a hole deep enough to bury her was a struggle yesterday in the humidity. The temperatures are creeping back up so I’m hoping to get caught up on the weeding and grass mowing today. Tomorrow has to be a shopping and cleaning day. The temperature will be climbing to near 90F but drop a little to the lower 80’s for the test of the week. My red leaf lettuce is doing great in this heat. I’ll be picking some this morning. The pea vines are loading up and the wild black raspberries are ripening.

Sorry to hear about your hen. My lettuce bolts in the heat!

I used their TomatoTone. Probably smells about the same. Hubby hates the smell, but since it was in the bottom of the planting hole, he won't smell it anymore.
Never used it BUT I am wanting to get something for my tomatoes. I thought maybe this year I’d actually pay more attention to them so I think this will go on my list for tomorrow
I really like the Espoma products. I've used several.

I think I read Espoma is one of the organic fertilizer producers that doesn't use any sewage sludge in their products.

Well, it's been an interesting weekend. Ran into my neighbor at the grocery store on Friday. He's an old retired guy who buys eggs from me. Said that his daughter gave him 4 hens that someone no longer wanted (a COVID buy, I suspect). He has no coop, no pen, nada. Doesn't even have food for them. I mentioned that I had an old coop he could have cause I was concerned about the safety of his chickens. He waved me off and said he'd get around to building one from an old camper shell eventually. OK...

Next morning he was knocking on my door. Something killed one of his chickens. 🙄 Showed me pictures. Likely a coon...

So tonight he came back with a trailer for the old coop. Took 3 men, three 2x12s, and a come-along to load it onto his trailer... All the while, a surprise severe storm bearing down on us. Lightning. High winds... I thought for sure we were going be toast. But we managed just in the nick of time right before we lost power at the house and it was so dark from the storm that we couldn't see anything.

Didn't have time to repair the fence we had to take down to get the coop out so I turned off the automatic door for the ducks until I can get out there in the morning.

So glad that coop is gone! It's one of the primary nesting places where those rats were hiding.
