What did you do in the garden today?

89 degrees, sunny and dry here. The peppers and tomatoes are wilting a little in the heat, so I'll give them a deep watering first thing tomorrow morning. A little stress is good for plants, I think. What doesn't kill ya makes ya stronger.

The beans in the same garden plot are looking great today, but I deep watered them a few days ago. The pole beans are finally starting to put out vines, so they'll start growing fast now.

Anyone ever have issues with skunks or opossums? We have trapped and released back on the property a couple each over time. Never noticed any issues with them being around except for the scat. Groundhogs a completely different matter.
My husband trapped and released 14 opossums last summer and I live in town. They never got in with my chickens, but they wreaked havoc on my tomatoes and pooped in my garden..yuck..

I ordered paste tomato seeds called Plum Regal and was excited to have a paste one that is supposedly disease resistant. I could only find them on Amazon when I was looking to purchase. Well I looked closely at them yesterday and I have 4 beautiful cherry tomato plants loaded. I already have two, so I cut three of the four down and planted corn. Gosh that's frustrating. Went on website to let them know they sent the wrong seeds and the shop is closed. You win some, you lose some and you try again next year. That's gardening in a nutshell.
I will be cooking down all my regular tomatoes per usual for sauce this summer.

Have 2 gallon bags full of garden huckleberries already, gosh those plants are prolific! Planted 4 of them this year as an experiment. Made up pie filling with some of them today, yuck!!!! Do not like the taste of them. Added grape juice concentrate to the filling and cooked down again and that helped alot. I can live with it this time, but would never be a favorite. Anyone have a recipe or two for huckleberries they could share?

Don't give them a chance with your chickens! They will totally eviscerate a hen and that is a vision you will never get out of your head. I used to leave the door open when the girls were free ranging so they could go in and lay or get something to eat, not anymore! Usually they're only around at night, but as I found out the hard way, not always.

Picked a few bottle gourds, one garlic and a couple lemons. Watered everything.
I baked one gourd in the oven with some salt and olive oil, and made tehine sauce, using half a lemon and some garlic. they will be mixed together as a side dish for fish and potatoes, cooked with the rest of the garlic. I love garlic.
