What did you do in the garden today?

Momma has taught our two new chicks well. At about a week and a half old they are right in there with the rest of them digging into the treats and she has consistently been expanding their foraging range as we let them out of their yard to run the property in the evening. I just find this fascinating and a clear indication of intelligent design.

I’m so behind on this thread. A lot has happened since my last post. I’ve been struggling with trying to get the yard and garden work caught up along with the delayed Spring cleaning. I’ve also been picking peas and wild black raspberries every day. I really need to process the peas and get them in the freezer. Saturday I was taking a big cardboard box out to the garage when I missed a step. I had a bad fall. I went to urgent care and got the head check. Tried to get the local ER to take a look and gave up on that. Tomorrow I get a CT scan and the X-rays the local hospital just couldn’t manage taken care of at the VA hospital in Boston. Trust me, the lump where I hit my head on the concrete floor was really big. I’ve been resting a lot but still doing the must do chores. Today was my first garden walk through the big garden and the gardens on the hill. My slicing tomatoes are starting to bloom. The pole beans are growing and climbing like crazy. The SM tomato plants look like they need fertilizing but the grapes are going well with the grapes getting bigger. I planted more curly kale last week and the seedlings are breaking through the soil. I’m looking forward to plant a short season acorn squash, some summer squash and pickling cucumbers at the beginning if next week. I’ll also be pulling the lettuce and planting chard as soon as I’m done with this medical stuff.
Resting will help healing ! Prayers you recover quickly

It’s been awhile! Got a super late start on the garden due to cold and heavy rains almost daily until June. Ended up buying starters to replace some of the stuff I planted too early. Seeded beans, onions & carrots late also. DH is my soil helper, and it was just too wet to do anything until June. I think I have my first summer squash ready, we have had lettuce, arugula, or kale salad every night, with some sautéed Swiss chard once a week as a treat.

The weather this year has been nothing like I’ve ever seen. A tornado went through 2 weeks ago and 2 people in my town died. We were without power for a few days and had to run the generator to keep the sub pump on so basement didn’t flood. Garden took a backseat. Then we had a week of 90+ temps (rare in northern NY).

I close my eyes at all the weeds and try to keep the areas around the veggies clear. DS went out to help me weed on Tue and we each got one walkway done. I have one raised bed empty still, maybe il plant some greens at the end of the month for late fall veggies.

If you are from the Midwest you know when corn blows down it usually stands back up on its own. With the straight line winds we got a couple nights ago mine got flattened. Didn't come back up this time, so I spent way to long propping it up and I only have a small area planted. We have had the worst winds with so much rain. On the bright side, everything is growing well. Picking cherry tomatoes, zucchini is almost ready and more onions. I'm a little concerned my potatoes are going to rot with how wet it is. More loud thunderstorms forecasted for tonight!

Always wondered what criteria was or is used to determine when a egg was no longer good to use. I usually buy bulk and would have several dozen store bought eggs in the refrigerator for in excess of a month or maybe longer and have never had a ‘bad’ egg.
I would say smell first. 😂. Egg producers "can" take up to 30 days to get their eggs to a store, so some store eggs could be a month old by the time they arrive at the store.

You could take a few eggs and date them from the time of purchase and open 1 in 1 month, the second in 2 months and the third in 3 months and check the quality.

Dehydrated and stored properly can last years. Some of ours are almost 3 years old and still re-hydrate and cook fine.

@Wee Farmer Sarah I hope you're ok! I had a fall right on my face in the middle of the street a few months ago. Dog jumped off a snow bank & took my legs right out from under me, couldn't even get my hands out to break the fall & smacked my head bad.

Went out to harvest another batch of blueberries today and got just shy of 7 lbs. Noticed another crop of strawberries coming on, will probably pick a few this evening. And, made a batch of cucumber/lime drink out of our latest cucumber harvest. Most of the previously harvests cukes are now officially kosher dill pickles to the tune of four large pickle jars……..so far. More pickles are on the way BECAUSE you can NEVER have enough pickles.:celebrateExcept sweet pickles, they should be outlawed…..what a travesty.
I couldn't agree more on the sweet pickles. :sick

had one decide to come in the dog door once so it could pee and poop all over the dining room.
OMG!! That's crazy! I would have lost my mind. I had the dog bring in a half eaten baby bunny once through his doggie door. :he Dropped it right on the LR rug. It was right after my back surgery too so I couldn't even bend over to pick it up.

Going to do the pickled eggs soon, don't have any canned beets here so I'm gonna just go with a regular pickle brine I think for now. Rained overnight & it's icky humid out so not much happening in the garden. Need to use up the overabundance of eggs so making pavlova and custard. I wish I had a freeze dryer like some of you for all the eggs...
