What did you do in the garden today?

From the web:

"For example, rhubarb, sunflowers, and thistles are all susceptible to curculios, a weevil that bores into cylindrical stalks to lay its eggs, and should not be planted near one another."

Well, the plant that didn't do well was the closest to the sunflowers I had about 10 feet away. I don't know if that was the problem or not. No sunflowers there this year.

Rhubarb likes moist, well drained, soil with lots of organic matter. Full sun to partial shade.

Like just about every other plant in my garden...

I've given it good soakings in the heat, and it looks like it's doing well.

I see some leaf damage on mine, but not a lot of chewing. Some of the old leaves turn brown and die, but they're still putting up new ones. I gave them all some chicken poop compost, and they got a lot of new growth after that.

My rhubarb history:
A neighbor gave me a split off one of hers. It's now huge and healthy. The next year (2023), I bought two plants. One did well; about August of last year, the other one looked like it was dying.

I read online about crown rot, assumed that's what the problem was, and dug it out. I *thought* there *might* be some mushiness to the root, but wasn't sure. That plant came back this spring -- tenacious, and I didn't get the entire root, obviously -- and I apologized to it profusely, claimed ignorance, gave it extra compost, and it's hanging in there.

Crown rot seemed to be the major problem rhubarb might have, other than something eating the leaves. I don't see a lot of bugs on my plants.

The rest of the saga...

This spring, I bought 3 crowns from a nursery. They were dried up and shriveled and about $50 for the three. Only one made it, and it is growing well. But... It's supposed to be the variety Canadian Red, and all of the stalks are green, like the variety Victoria. I really hope the stalks are red next spring and that the greenness is a juvenile plant phase it's going through. If not, I won't be buying plants from that store again. This isn't the first time I've gotten less than/not what I paid for.

Guarantee be damned; I'm not going to argue about the money. They can't do anything about me losing a year.
That is about like buying seeds! Sometimes it is about like Forrest Gump! Ya never know what your`e gonna get! Lol 😅 I don`t know how many times we have gotten seeds and they were either the wrong variety or the wrong plant! Happens with cabbage mostly, end up with brussell sprouts, cauliflower or broccoli! I will say a great place to get seeds is MI Gardener in Michigan! Great seeds and he offers plenty of informative videos for the new and experienced gardener! 👍 Even a fellow Michigander for you!

I love rhubarb! So much so that I can't tell you how much money I've spent trying to get it to grow . I had it when I lived in new mexico, just popped it in the ground in full shade and it thrived. Such an easy plant, I thought. Here in kentucky, can't get it to survive. I've tried full sun, part sun, shade. I've had it in clay, sand, potting mix, veggie soil, even straight compost. Every corner of 5 acres has had a rhubarb planted there at one time, including trying it in pots. I love rhubarb, rhubarb doesn't like me. (sobs)

Here's a link to one of a number of charts I found when I did a quick internet search. oxilate content of food 100g Clinical Nutrition Research Wow, look at parsley😯 Who'd've thunk!?!
Now I’m wondering if enough would get in the hives if one were to put it in the middle of a parsley patch and harvest/weedwack it occasionally. 🤔

This is part of why I frequent seed libraries and swaps and such. The risk of something being other than advertised is still there, but at least the seeds are free!
