What did you do in the garden today?

I picked 3 more habaneros today. I told hubby he has to make salsa in the morning. It'll cook down for a couple hours, and then I'll can it.

Monday will probably be another tomato canning day.

A friend says that canning tomatoes are selling for $40 a bushel near her. I have a note in my canning book from back when I bought tomatoes to can: 1 bu = 21 quarts.

So this year, I saved us about $100 by starting (from saved seeds) and growing our own tomatoes.

I came close to blowing up a couple pint jars a little while ago. I was processing 3 pints of dill pickles and I guess I didn't get all the air out of the jars. The lids and rings blew off of two of the jar tops. The glass didn't break. Come to think of it, I also snugged down the rings a little tighter than usual this time too. That could've been the problem.

I'm attempting to fix the two jars of pickles. I had extra brine left over that I refilled the two jars of cukes with and will put them in the fridge. Maybe they'll still be edible.

NO worries, my fault. I SHOULD check before I send, but rarely do.
Last night it changed the word sauce to dust, which really confused my sister talking about a spaghetti dinner. Sigh.
I don't even know HOW it managed to come up with that one.

$36 for 30 pounds here. I JUST passed the place that sells them that way on the way home. Although, this is the same place I caught selling Kirklands green beans as "homegrown" beans at the farmer's market a few years ago.

I picked a grape to see how they're coming along. I noticed that it was a little bit softer and it actually had a hint of sweetness to it.

As I ventured into the tomato jungle today, machete armed Sherpa leading the way, I realized that we’ve actually had a pretty good harvest this year. Plenty of canned tomatoes and the earlier mentioned salsa for the pantry plus mounds of cherry tomatoes. I have to say this year we have been well blessed.

I had a good start with grapes this year. I have GOT TO stop letting the hens free range the entire yard. Or maybe re-jigger things so they're not so accessible.

Today, after realizing I was short on jars mid project, and running down to the local hardware for more I decided to inventory my jars. To my surprise we have over 330 jars total. Split up unevenly between quarts, WM quarts, pints, and half pints.

A couple of years ago a work friend was cleaning out her grandmother's house which she'd recently inherited. She found some canning jars and gave them all to me. Besides the quarts and pints, I am the owner of 30 or so half gallon antique Ball, Mason, and Atlas canning jars. Out of curiosity I checked the interwebs. That was a valuable gift.
