What did you do in the garden today?

I can't win for losing with these dang broodies! :barnie

I have a beautiful crested black hen that I finally decided, after 3 years, to allow her to sit a clutch of eggs. After sitting for weeks, other hens kept intruding and causing problems. So I moved the hen and 8-ish eggs into a hardware cloth wrapped dog crate. She was doing great but I noticed last week that she was tossing random eggs out from under her. It's been so hot that I figured either they were dead or she was cooling them down.

Anyway, about 4 or 5 days ago, she hatched a single chick. It was black and white. Very cute. I left them in the crate to see if anymore would hatch. Nothing...

Today I was going to let mama and baby out of the crate since the temperature is going to incredibly hot... One for the record books. As I opened the door, I realized she had a brand new chick that had just hatched. It was all black. Broody was very upset and was pacing the cage. She kept stepping and standing on the newly hatched chick. And...the black and white one is GONE. I have no clue what happened to it. I don't know if she killed it or it died because of the heat or maybe a rat got in there somehow? I don't know... But given the she is showing very little interest in the new chick, I'm disappointed.

I checked on her again and the new chick is still alive. She is sitting next to it. I'll keep checking a couple of times a day. I can't really check for the body of the other chick in the hay because she freaks out anytime I reach in there and I don't want her to trample the other baby.

I have not actually. Do you know of any good alien DNA testing facilities?
I don't... But I'm told this guy might be able to help you with that! 😜

I was bored around a month ago so and thought growing fruit from the seeds of store bought stuff would be interesting. Not sure why I thought starting in July would be a good idea but I have strawberries, plums, cherries, and a peach all being cold stratified in the basement fridge. The only thing I have room for is the strawberries but oh well. I’m planning on taking out some of the strawberry seeds and attempting to grow them soon. Then I will have indoor strawberry plants over winter or something? I am not great at planning ahead but ill figure something out

Strawberry plants can be set out in the fall. I've read they do better because the roots get established over the winter months.

You're lucky. I haven't gotten a single ripe tomato yet. None are even turning yet either.

Went out and checked on the broody. New hatchling is still alive... Mama and baby were sitting side-by-side at the front of the crate. I used a stick to try to sift through the hay at the back of the crate to look for the body of the other missing chick. No bones. Didn't find anything and mama started to get nervous so I stopped. I'm probably just going to have to wait a few days to get a better opportunity to look.
