What did you do in the garden today?

It was almost impossible to get hay done is year. The rain was SO frequent, and never enough to be beneficial, just enough to ruin a hay run.
This year for us. One field didn't even get its last cutting and now it's too late.
Means: we have to fork out money to buy what hay we couldn't harvest.

I am going to try Novogen Brown chickens from FreedomRanger Hatchery next. They are big birds and were bred for eggs. They say it's a cross between a Rhode Island Red and a Rhode Island White. https://www.freedomrangerhatchery.com/shop/product/novogen-layer/

You must have a lot of chickens! I have one RIR cockerel, one NH cockerel, one RIR pullet and 5 New Hampshire pullets. I'm kind of curious how the chicks from a RIR over NH pullet cross would turn out. And vice versa, a NH over a RIR pullet.

I will cull all the roosters when they start to crow and cull the hens after two years. There is a two-chicken limit in my residential area and a fine if neighbors complain. I have to monitor the sound of my roosters, and I can only keep one. A lot of people raise chickens where I live, so it's okay as long as no one complains.

New Hamshire chickens were developed from Rhode Island Reds though selective breeding for meat production. They selected birds that grew faster, feathered earlier, and had better carcass quality.

I had a GIANT New Hampshire Red roo about 20 years ago. He was a gentle giant... As large as a toddler but never had a mean bone in his body. Neighbor's dogs killed him... And our pet boer goat. 🤬 Afterwards I tried to buy/raise another NHR roo but he tried to flog anything that moved. After he attacked my kids, I went after him with a baseball bat. He ended up in the stew pot that night. First time I learned that when chickens die under stress, it ruins the meat... 🙄

Finished putting my garden to bed for the winter just in the nick of time. It is getting really cold this weekend. Glad to be done tilling. I don't have a big garden per say and only a small electric tiller, but it gets the job done. Finished getting the coop wrapped today also. Since we have had a rather wonderful fall, everything feels like we are doing it to late. One strange year for weather in the Midwest that's for sure.

you have chickens walking everywhere around the island but are not allowed to raise more than 2? sounds like total nonsense.
