What did you do with your flock today?

Zack

I think Martha is his biological mother.

See the white wing feather?

I removed the dog crate brooder on Sunday afternoon, and redid the perches, and reorganized the run with lots of hidey holes for the latest hatch of chicks. And threw a flake of straw down.

Happy hens!

Think you're right! He's a handsome boy, for sure 😍
The run looks good. Nothing more important than keeping the hens 😊

I've been very busy on the farm and not here lately. I finally found a search word that got me back here. I have something kind of special to me going on here on the homestead no. We have a fully matured (with very big spurs) Delaware rooster that guards and takes care of a mixed pen of chicks that range in age from 8 weeks to crowning. He will take a treat and call them to it just like they were a flock of hens. He roosts with them at night and stays with them during the day while out free ranging. He has a forever home here.
Aww, good roos are the best! And he'll teach any younger roos in the pen how to be good roos in turn.
And welcome back. You've been missed!

The ducks were very happy today when I refilled their pool I turned over a piece of wood that had bugs under it so that got the attention of most of the chickens.

Day before yesterday the girls batted 1000. 6 eggs, 6 hens. Even Onyx laid one. She seems to be a once a week girl for now, until she fully recovers from the vampires, which no longer seem to be present. Yay! The permethrin and tearing off the panels has worked. How is everyone? and if you are also a gardener, it gets extra busy from yesterday until tomorrow. Our grandson is here for the summer, so keeping me busy feeding a teenager, and helping him to make summer funds by helping me with deliveries. They grow up so fast!

How wonderful to have your grandson there for the summer! Enjoy!

A couple of my hens have been trying to sneak out of the coop when I open the door. We're going on vacation in early July, and I was thinking about how my chicken sitter would handle that situation.

I think I came up with a possible solution using the plastic fencing I'd removed from the melon area earlier today:

It's not predator proof, but is simply a deterrent to keep predators out and chickens contained (briefly) if they sneak out.

May hatch chicks are drinking from the adult waterers! I can remove the baby waterers.
