What did you do with your flock today?

Okay, here’s a sort of blurry but adorable picture of them a bit fluffed up…the cheeks!! 😍😍😍😍

I didn’t get much done today. My uncle passed away a couple days ago and we had his funeral today. He has always been one of my favorite uncles. He lived an amazing life though. My favorite aunt, his wife, isn’t doing good either. And since he has gone, I suspect it won’t be long before she passes away. It is an eye opener how many are left in my family when we no longer fill a funeral home. We weren’t even close. But most of my family is old…like my Uncle should really be a great uncle to me. My family dynamics is kinda crazy…really though just shows you how much times have changed.

And while I’m gone the coop door shut, so they chickens couldn’t get in to lay eggs. I thought I had that door fixed yesterday but nope…not even close. So it kinda worked out because my BSL laid an egg and nobody pecked it open. But as soon as I opened the door when I got home, Marble hopped right in to lay. There was a couple girls and the rooster that followed her in. The laying Brown leghorn, Lilo started doing the egg song for her 🤣 🤣🤣🤣. She is the only one to do it.
Sorry to hear about your uncle. :hugs

Oh cute! Love the cheeks, love the color ♡ What breed are they?
They are Bearded d’Anvers! So they will go in my d’Anver group eventually! I got these from a show breeder, so I’m hoping they will bring some quality to my birds when I start breeding more seriously 🥰 I also have a line on some cuckoo d’Anvers so I may look into adding those in the spring. I think tiny barred fluffy birds would be so fun!

This is one of the mommas! 😍😍

I googled the cuckoo d'anvers. Very cute. It will be so much easier for you when you start hatching your own eggs. Way less stress ♡

Yeah, I can’t wait! The self blues and blacks will be ready come spring…but there are only 2 ladies and 4 men so I need to get a couple more pullets…so another black pullet and a cuckoo one wud sure be fun! I really like the roosters of this breed, they’re very showy and strut like they know they’re handsome but they’re also super nice. That’s a pretty good combo! I am going to go ahead and guess that I got a girl and a boy and test my sexing skills. I find pea and rose comb birds easier to guess on. Also I’m learning that the whiny chick is almost always a boy 😆😆 I have one chick that seems really mellow and calm and the other one is cheep cheeping and can’t sit still. I just love watching animal behaviors ☺️

After a very long day in town and after I unloaded ours and AJs supplies I visited with the the chickens and prepped a bath for Share. After bathing her I gently pulled about 40mils of fluid from her abdomen, dabbed her with neosporin and let her back out with the flock after a 1/2 hour waiting period. She still has plenty more fluid but I have read that pulling too much can be harmful and also that they will leak some out were needle exited. She was such a good girl and for a shy girl did not seem to mind my company at all. She walked around much better the last hour of daylight. I put her back in the chicken hospital. If she seems up to it I may extract some more fluid from her tomorrow. DH takes AJ to ear docs tomorrow so I will have time to focus on my flock.

What a good girl Share is 🥰 I have found that my chickens seem to know we are helping them to some degree and put up less of a fight—may just be because they don’t feel well, but I think some is just that trust you build with them they instinctually understand. Animals also seem much better at knowing your true heart than most humans do in my opinion.

I’m sure you are glad to have DH back to help with AJ so you can catch up with your chickens and bags! ❤️❤️ How is Hope’s eye?
