What did you do with your flock today?

Lizzie used the nesting boxes this morning!!! I literally had to do a double take! Never seen her even in them much less use em to lay her egg! Then she hopped out n sang her song!
Go Lizzie!!!
Daisy is broody...I've moved her grumpy booty again and again but she ain't budging. So I sat her on the roost bar! Her being a Satin she never roosts...so we'll see of she hops down n goes back to her spot in the coop or not!

To ferment fee with sourdough discard or not....this is something I ran across and wanted yalls input! Have ya ever done this? I've read few articles bout it...what yall think?

Yay Lizzie! I just love grumpy broody ladies hehe.

As for fermenting, I have not done it but I know a lot of people really like it. I can't imagine why sourdough discard would be bad--but I am no expert. :)

I was lucky enough to have a distant neighbor that raised goats. Her babies got two days with their mom for the colostrum and then they were sold cheap to another distant neighbor who raised them for butcher. She kept her boys separate too. She was a wealth of information and her girls were so so sweet.

The behavior stuffs just from watching and interacting with them. Our young boys would go headbutt crazy for a while but it's all play. We had a lot of kid visitors back then and I could see how the boys responded to different people's reactions. Goats are great...confuse them and they headbutt more 🤣. Our old boys that we raised ourselves were very mellow and only reared to greet. They were fun little eating machines. They love love love to eat everything...lol.

I made cheese out of the milk ❤️. I made lots of farmers cheese and mozzarella. Tried a few others too but those were my family's favorites. The farmers cheese is so easy to make and mozzarella is fun to make.
My aunt tried to convince me to get meat goats. She said the “miniature” goats weren’t worth anything. I told her that I wasn’t raising them for meat. They will be more like pet lawn mowers. Having 3.5 acres of grass to cut takes him a really long time. So the idea would be to have a permanent area for them and then set them up with a movable fence to get them into other grassy areas. If I was to do meat anything it would have to go to auction. I wouldn’t want to eat “Fred” or know I was eating “Fred”. I get attached to easy.

Luckily right now he is only butting his head when he is annoyed with our dog. It would be fun to see him playing with another like that. I feel so bad cause he is lonely. We tried to see if she had others but unfortunately not. And I have been searching everywhere for a friend for him and I can’t find any. So we are going to continue to look but wait for the ones being born this week. And then of course there will be the waiting until they are ready period. But either way, until he has a friend we are going to be looking, even if that means ending up with more than one other 😁.

Once I get to that point I will have to find out how made the cheese. I think it would be cool. I have one daughter that just LOVES goat cheese. I introduced it last year to our family and they all loved it until they learned it was goat cheese. Then all of a sudden it was “gross”. They will have to learn to love it. 🤣

I haven’t heard of doing that sourdough stuff. I’m going to look into it more.

Go Lizzie!!! How are the other girls doing with the new nest boxes? I have one that I thought was going broody but luckily she didn’t. She was only on her 3rd egg but boy she was aggressive when I pulled the curtain back to see which one was in there and she got snippy with another chicken who just got her head too close. I didn’t dare reach in there after seeing that but she did move. I wouldn’t want her having eggs yet anyway because it would have only been her 3rd egg but ALSO winter is too close and it is too cold for me to be ok with that. I hope she moves on and doesn’t go back to the box for you! Hopefully she will wait til spring!

All that are laying are laying in the nest boxes except for Daisy...which she began laying before I got the nest boxes so I understand.
Really happy Lizzie followed the d'uccles pattern of using nest boxes!
I sure hope so! She's not being snippy...just growls lol 😆 I've been keeping eggs up so she's not even sitting on any..but pretty sure she had laid any since she started this either.

I’m happy that they are using them!!

Yeah I got a growl too! Which was like listening to Jurassic Park!

What's funny is I was getting Miss Daisy out of the coop and all the boys were makin sure she was all good...and when Lizzie sang her egg song from the nest boxes in the run they all three perked up, growled like a mountain lions and took off!
I went back out and tried my darndest to keep Miss Daisy OUT of the coop and on the porch with all the others but even in the dark she bulldozed past all 7 others knocking them off the porch to get back to her beloved spot in the coop. She did have an egg under her when I first went out tonight so I confiscated that one!

Ive done sourdough before. Im a huge fan of fermented foods. I love the frozen seed balls idea in that post ❤️ I always just dumped it in their treat bowl...now I feel like a mean momma! 🤣

Same here. I get attached too easy. I was raised with butchering, but the older I get the less stomach I have for it. I introduced goat cheese by growing nasturtiums and putting some cheese in the center with a tiny sprig of dill. The kids got such a kick out of eating their stuffed flowers...lol. It was instant love. If your kids like lasagna, maybe you could try making some with farmers cheese in place of the ricotta...that was hit with my kids too.

Growls! 🤣🤣🤣 Never thought of it that way but that's a good description! I just love how they puff up and turn fierce when they're brooding ❤️ We have one little girl brooding an empty nest right now too. Yay for Lizzie!
Today, or rather this evening I pre put up the chicken fence. Wanted to see where it would go, etc. By next Monday we should have a free ranging flock of chickens; yip yip!!!
Hooray! Sounds like a lot of work, but very exciting ❤️
