What did you do with your flock today?

I'm guessing there are gonna be a lot more chickens dropped off now that "everyone" thinks it's a good idea to start having em...til they don't. Ya know
He's a cute fellow. You have such a big heart and ability to work with em!

I'm really clueless when it comes to adult chicken problems! I'm sorry. Hopefully nothing serious though.
My 3 d'uccles have been fighting out a new pecking order since Coco and China have a new home. And one of em had puffy eye and a cut on top eye lid...and of course the comb. Could it be that?
It could be. I thought at first she'd gotten something in her eye, but I wiped her eye clean and few minutes later both eyes had bubbles. Cleaned her eyes with saline and isolated her and the bubbles haven't come back. So maybe nothing to worry about.

Pouring snow today but only sticking to roofs so far.
Well I’m glad that is all it is doing. It is just cold and windy here. I didn’t let the cockerel go out cause it was such a drop and with his foot I didn’t think it was a good idea. He wasn’t happy with me though. I hope everyone is doing good there!

It's my birthday at the end of January too! I can't tell you the number of things we've planned then had to call off because of the rubbish weather. It better not be an issue next year as it's a big birthday and hopefully will fulfil a lifelong dream.
I hope it is good for you next year, but since our birthdays always have poop weather…I’m sure you’re like me and not holding your breath lol. I will send lots of positive vibes and thoughts come next year for you!

Yeah I can only imhow he must be with ya.
Big drop in temp...nothing like the blizzard thank God! And pretty rough winds so I'm putting em in the coop at night and locking em up. I'm keeping an eye on the humidity inside the coop and still lower than it is outside but it's been really high humidity the past few days even outside.
I miss green grass and sunshine so badly!!!

@TropicalBabies keep sending us the pics of your luxury spot over yonder please !!!

We took Elliot to the vet today as his cystitis has flared up badly and although he's peeing well, there's blood in it. He's been given meloxaid and baytril and is clearly more comfortable already.

it was pitch black by the time we got home so I did the rounds with my egg candler (couldn't find a torch anywhere!). Everyone had put themselves to bed perfectly well. I couldn't shut the sliding door on the little coop so I popped the egg candler down on the straw. Penelope immediately decided to brood it and plunged us all into darkness. Way to go, Penelope!
I actually think she has FOMO and that's why she's dropping eggs all over the place. If she hears me outside and she's in the nest box, she's straight out, whatever stage of laying she is at
Ferdy is turning into some sort of Superdad! Stan is showing more and more interest in the ladies so I thought Ferdy would start chasing him off mercilessly. Not so! He's actually standing back and allowing him to mate with Pru and Penelope and only intervening if it goes on too long or Stan is too rough! When he does step in, it's just a loud shout and gentle peck. And he's still giving Stanley treats like the girls! I've never had a father/son roo combo before so I'm not sure if this is normal?
Poor Stan can't get any privacy with the girls - if it's not his dad watching his moves, it's his aunt Gladys looming over him!

I also found out today that I'm actually hand feeding two wild robins!

Pretty sure I mentioned that we had a new rooster dropped off. Like many b4 he made his way into my son's big Mango tree backyard and up to our fences where he has been camping, avoiding the established flock of ferals and sngging up to our fence line to be close to our flock. I tossed him food a few times a day to help him out and he took to roosting on the ladder we use to hop the fence. So last eve I picked him up and caged him.View attachment 3374341
Typical 'game bird' comb and wattle cut and his spurs were trimmed back too. Looks to be at least a year old with the demeanor of a lost pup. I was happy to hear his clucking at finding fresh food and water in his cage this morning but UNFORTUNATELY. View attachment 3374348
Spider can't seem to leave him alone. So Spider and the crew got grounded to the run and I put barriers up around roosters temp housing. 😐
So hard to like humans
Poor little roo! He's really quite pretty. Is there any possibility he's lost rather than dumped by some POS?
I'm ashamed to be called human.

I'll have to do that... she's a stunner.

I've met a lot of people who claim their dogs are coyote crosses...but what I read says that's very rare. Coyotes can cross with wolves, but the breeding seasons are wrong for dogs and on top of that the rare breedings that happen usually end up in pups that don't even make it to birth. But that's just something I read so :idunno .

We do end up having to find homes for dogs and puppies occasionally though....sometimes they're in sad shape from starvation. And occasionally we'll end up with a dumped dog that messes with people's animals. Occasionally we'll come across bones that look canine when out walking. Desert dumping is about the dumbest thing anyone can do I think.
Not just dumb but incredibly cruel! Dumping any animal anywhere is just plain cowardice. It makes me so, so furious I can't even speak🤬

Was watching my yokos today and noticed one of the hens had bubbles in the corner of her eyes and a little swelling just under on one side. Isolated her to a parrot cage on the porch and reading about possibilities.View attachment 3374654View attachment 3374656View attachment 3374657Not sure how well that shows, especially since I already wiped away the bubbles. But that area under her eye is normally flat. No parasites visible, she's acting completely normal and healthy...reading has me wondering if it's mycoplasma.

Anyone encountered this before?
It’s very likely Mycoplasma :-( I have found Terramycin to be sufficient to treat it when it’s just a bit of sinus inflammation. Couple times a day for 3-5 days and she should be good 🤞🏻 She’s so cute 🥰

Is she displaying any other symptoms at all? It can be a number of respiratory infections starting up but the most likely are mycoplasma, infectious coryza or avian flu.
I'd suggest that m.gallisepticum is most likely given the lack of other symptoms and the infraorbital sinus swelling. Mycoplasma is bacterial and doxycycline, oxytetracycline and tylosin are all effective treatments. Penicillin based antibiotics won't work due to the way they attack the bacteria's cell wall.
if it's coryza she'll develop foul smelling discharge and there's a whole host of other symptoms if it's avian flu. Both are viral but antibiotics will stop secondary bacterial infection developing so it's recommended antibiotic treatment is started immediately.
Personally, I'd do the usual isolation, keep her warm, comfortable and start her on a suitable antibiotic straight away.
Bear in mind, Mycoplasma can be transmitted via environmental factors such as clothing and footwear so it's essential to use good biosecurity measures to stop it spreading to your other birds. It can also be spread by the exhalation of droplets by infected birds and by vertical transmission through eggs to chicks. Good news is most birds recover (though the infection never fully leaves the bird and my re-occur periodically). Also, the bacterium can't survive in the environment for more than a few hours - another reason why it's important to have scrupulous biosecurity.
I'd also add a vit b complex to help support her.

Thank you!
I'll need them as if all goes to plan I'll be cage diving with great white sharks.
